Got in my 87 to go to work today and noticed lots of white smoke. Looks very, very bad. Head gaskets I'm afraid.
Anyone know a fair mechanic in NE Ohio? I've contacted one guy, waiting for his estimate.
If it's the MAF, it should be throwing codes. You should have a service engine soon light. There's a procedure to pull the codes with a paper clip. Do a search.
It's a wide range. I think it's 84-89 in one. 90-91 in another and 92-96 in yet another. Not sure. I just needed the 84-89. That's why Haynes is not always right, they cover multiple years, and there are differences. But it gets you close. I have both a Haynes and an FSM.
Anytime.
One other suggestion. Get a Haynes manual. I get the feeling you're like me. That is, you're not a professional mechanic, and have to desire to become one. The Factory Service Manual is very detailed, but I find it hard to work with. The Hanyes manuals are more like Corvette repair...
I'm not a mechanic. I like working on my car when it's done. I hate it when I'm in the middle of it. I've found people near me that will work on it, and not kill me for the price, but with varying degrees of success. Here is what I've done so far that seems to work:
- Always work with the...
You're way better at this then I'll ever be, but we knew that! :)
I spent 3 hours on #2 alone. From the perspective of a non mechanic, what I posted is how I'd attack it if I had to do it again.
I don't want to hijack the thread, but this seems pertinent. I didn't get anti-sieze on the electrode, but I was a bit liberal with it. I didn't realize the stuff was a problem. Anyway, when I finally got the car started, it seemed to run ok, but made some smoke. I thought it was running rich...
I just did it on my L98. That's supposed to be easier. The passenger side was brutal, the driver's side was ridiculously easy. I got a lot of good advice here and elsewhere. Here's my summary:
- Make sure the engine is cold.
- Start with the passenger side so you are fresh.
- Jack it up, put it...
No pic, I finally got it. I can get a pic if you really want to see. The stuff in the way is smog stuff. #8 was difficult. #6 a little easier, #4 was very tough, but #2 was almost impossible. I finally got an articulated 3/8" drive ratchet, a 3/4" socket, and put it over the end of the spark...
I'm trying to tune up my 1987. I started on the right side, since it's hardest. Jacked it up, removed the wheel and the fender skirt. I got the first 3, #8, #6, and #4. I quit for the night at #2. How in the heck do I get that thing out? I'm stumped.
Not saying it can't be done. I'm just saying most, I know me for sure, like things to be as easy as possible. The L98 has a lot more torque, and more off the shelf stuff. The LT1 is even better in terms of starting point.
Don't get me wrong, I like the 84s, and a nice example of an 84 is...
Wow, you froze? That sucks, I've created similar bad luck for myself in my younger days. Fortunately for you and me, no one was seriously hurt, and you can use it as a learning experience.
It's hard to say what the 84 you're looking at is worth. My best guess, $6k. I have a co-worker who bought...
