FYI, there is also a snap ring removal tool. It looks like a pair of pliers with two small points that spreads with ring apart for removal.

Thanks for the help. I'm lost trying to help my dad with his 84'. It will run great for a couple of min, then won't start again for hours. I think it's something electronic and heat/temp related. I was hoping it was the ignition control module but I guess not. Here is what he's changed so far...
