I would check the egnition timing.It sounds like it should be advanced more.

I don`t have any expieriance with the tires you have mentioned,but I have used Firestone Firehawks in that size which I purchased from Tire Rack awhile back,and I can honestly say that I felt that they were a great wearing and handling tire both dry and wet.
