    Power assist problem

Gentlemen, thank you very much for your responses. Guess I'll be sending this one back. We'll see if the next one works. When I rebuilt the chassis I removed the system and reinstalled it as it was the original and it wasn't leaking yet. That was 7 years ago and when I reinstalled that one it...

    H-E-I ?????

I can't comment on any real performance gain, as I put in an HEI distributor in my 72 when I rebuilt the motor. Any performance gain for me was more from the build than the distributor. But you CAN have HEI and still use your original mechanical tach as I did. I put in HEI unit from Dragon...

    Power assist problem

Just installed a power steering renew kit from Corvette Central on my '72. Control valve (new), and slave cylinder (rebuilt), and all new hoses. After all installed and the system bled the wheel is hard to turn. In fact when I test drove the car it feels like manual steering. I balanced the...

    Vert top frame progress

The tack strip in that back bow is in pretty good. I would remove all the staples first and then you have to pry it out. (The staples help that strip to expand a bit and get really tight in the bow channel.) Once you get it started it shouldn't be too hard to remove it. Then you can put a new...

    Vert top frame progress

I'm doing this right now on my 72! I have a new top and the dvd from Al Knoch and after watching it a few times have removed my old top. I've replaced the necessary tack strips and started installing the new pads last night. One word of advice about the dvd. The quality on the first one I got...

Motor Blown! Rebuild or Crate It?

"Motor Blown" Update After the shop got a good look at the engine block and heads they quoted me on fixing the original block. It would need two sleeves and a new crank. I'm not going there. The cost would be prohibitive and I wouldn't feel confident with the motor after all that work. Found a...

Motor Blown! Rebuild or Crate It?

The motor is the original for this car. I wouldn't consider a repair if it was a replacement. Eventhough the shop I took it to understands the importance of keeping the numbers intact, we had a lengthy conversation about it just to make sure. But I don't want to get ahead of myself here. We...

Motor Blown! Rebuild or Crate It?

Well I got the motor out. Threw a rod just like I thought. One cylinder wall is cracked. I dropped it off at a good local machine shop that I know, and they will disassemble it the rest of the way and advise. If it's not too bad they said they could sleeve it to save the original block. I wonder...

Motor Blown! Rebuild or Crate It?

It's not an LT1, the avatar was off this site. It's an original stock 350. This car is for me, nobody else. I've got the motor pretty well stripped down, I will probably pull it out on Tues. or Wed. Heads "look" OK from up top anyway, all push rods are straight. When I was removing the fluids...

Motor Blown! Rebuild or Crate It?

Thanks for all the responses so far guys. Just to answer a couple questions. I bought this car 5 years ago and have been rebuilding it ever since. It's got the stock 350 in it mated to the muncie 4 sp. It is not pristine but, I have rebuilt the complete chasis and the interior. The only thing...

Motor Blown! Rebuild or Crate It?

Hey Folks, need some input. Motor broke last weekend. (took me this long to talk about it without drenching the keyboard :cry) I have a 72 convertible with the original matching mill. I'm torn with all the numbers matching "garbage". Should I rebuild her or get a crate? Push me off the fence...

    Control Arm Bushings

I'm not surprised. The Corvette shop here charges 75/hr+. That's why I only go to him if I have too. I like to do everything myself if I can. Well, you can do what I did and remove the old bushings yourself so that you can clean up the CA's and shafts so they look good. Then bring them in just...

    Control Arm Bushings

Fred, While all the advice I got was awsome, I actually used the last method suggested. And for removal, I am convinced that method was the best for my situation. My CA sleeves were rusted pretty bad. I got a long hole saw, (1 1/4" dia. I think it was, not sure right now I'm not at home)...

    Quad - Jet Carb

LanceB, If it's never been rebuilt, I'd suggest getting it done. I just did mine last month, and WOW. Didn't realize how bad it really was. Alot of people will bash the Q'jet but if it's rebuildable, the Q'jet is a very realiable street carb. John
