I had the same problem and it turned out to be the connector on the lower part of the steering collumn. It was loose and I kept hitting it with my foot. All I had to do to "fix" it was tie it up to the collumn.

I would guess the actuator because it is common for them to go bad. Of corse I would check the hoses first but I bet it's an actuator.
Just sounds like it.
Jim
It sounds like you need to rebuild the actuator. It is real easy to do, just replace the seals. Kits are cheep also. I did mine in a couple of hours.
Good luck

Put a "C" clamp a few inches up from the end of the spring and using a floor jack on the "C" clamp, jack the spring up to relieve the tension from the end bolt. Once the bolt is removed you can let the spring down and do the other side. It really is very easy and not very dangerous at all. Good...
I had a lot of trouble getting the TA bolts back in when I did by TA bushings. Then I read in this form to use a small wire feed it through the bolt hole then through the cotter pin hole on the bolt and pull the bolt through. I don't know if that works but sounds like it may. If it does it will...
That’s where my Distributor hooks up. I would assume they blocked it because of some mod (different distributor) or something. I would unplug it and try it, if it doesn’t work you can always replug it without much trouble.
Good Luck

Run them into each other. Better yet get another hose and run it from the pump to the top of the engine, leave the other hoses intact so when you get to fixing the core you will not need to get new hoses. That is unless your hoses are shot also.
Jim
Get an Assembly Manual. You can find them on e-bay or any catlog house. it will show you how it all fits together. Mine sure has helped me. Good luck.

Replacing the seal is real easy. Getting the trans out, not so easy. the seal goes around the input shaft behind the converter. It is easy to pop out and drive another one in. Good luck
Jim
I do mine myself. It's easy if you have the tools. You will need a bender and flare tool for the ends. It's also alot cheeper even with the cost of the tools.

Wow Mike!
Looks good.
I have used my garage to paint also. Lots of plastic, I used 3 box fans on the floor (up on blocks) pointing out with the door partly up and my kids outside with a hose to keep all the dust down. I also flooded the floor with water before I started. It worked well.

If you already have it out and the rebuild kit is not too much, you mite as well go ahead and rebuild it. This is the way I do things; the only problem is sometimes the car I’m working on is down way too long. All those little things you fine once you get into something. Good luck
