As already stated, there are aftermarket intakes which collect are from the area in front of the radiator. These types of intakes would be more prone to the situation you are asking about.

With the ALDL connector untouched, no terminals shorted, nothing connected, when key is turned to on, not start, SES light should illuminate.

The fuel pump is extracted through the top of the top of the tank. You will need to remove the fuel filler door, and the rubber boot that is beneath. This may be brittle so take car as not to rip it. Once that is removed, you should see everything you need to pull the pump.
