    Detonation?!?

Yes, I'm asking about the mechanical advance. Please allow me to be more specific As posted earlier, here are the specs according to my chassis service manual I need to see the following settings below. (BTW, my manual does not have my distributor listed. The tag on the distributor says...

    Detonation?!?

So I agree that I need stronger springs. I guess my bigger issue is that I'm not getting enough advance in the fist place I should see at least 32, and not 28 right? What would cause that?

    Detonation?!?

Ok I think I understand. I'm wondering if the current setup might be advancing at idle. I'm going to put a rubber band over the weights and see if there is a timing difference.

    Detonation?!?

    Looking in the 1970 chassis service manual. The specs for the l46 (which the car was from the factory) and the lt1 which this car is built to using the l46 distributor. L46: 0 @ 1000 10 @ 1700 26 @ 5000 0 @ 7" 15 or 12@ 12" (depending on part number) 8 degrees initial bBTDC LT-1: 0 @ 1200...

    Detonation?!?

Ok something is wrong with my distributor, or I'm doing something wrong. I started the car and let it warm up. Got it to idel at 750. Pulled the vaccume advance, and plugged it. Used the dial back timing light to verify 12 degrees initial timing. I then put my wife behind the wheel and...

    Detonation?!?

I've owned this car for almost 6 years. Alays put 93 in it. Just seem to be worse after my heads had the valve job. Then even worse after the rockers. Now having said that. I took the car out and beat on it. I cannot believe how much more pep it has with timing set to 12 degrees. Now...

    Detonation?!?

I know people have said don't put too much stock into cranking pressure. . .but I wanted to get opinions on my compression readings. Are the ok, too much. Too far out of wack?
  8. Bolisk

    Detonation?!?

I went out just now and found what I believe to be TDC on the compression stroke. The balancer appears to be correct. I pulled the cap and rotor was just past 1 on its way to 8. I think this is correct based on the firing happening at 12 degrees BTDC. So I don't think a cog has jumped...
  9. Bolisk

    Detonation?!?

Yes you have. Can someone point point me to a procedure on how to do that, or explain it to me. Not really sure how to. :)
  10. Bolisk

    Detonation?!?

I'll try to get those numbers tommrow.
  11. Bolisk

    Detonation?!?

Actually the part that seemed to be hanging the weights up, was the top of what I would call to rivets underneath the center of both weights. The had wear markes in them.

    Detonation?!?

Just got some time in the garage. I got the car good and hot, made sure it was idling at 750 using an analog inductive tach. Pulled the cap, looks good, rotor looked good. Pulled the rotor and checked the mechanical advance. Fist issue, the weights would not move smoothly or snap back like...

    Detonation?!?

I added 4 gallons of sonoco 100 and the issue got better. I used to run on 93 with no issues. Now it makes the noise under load past 3500 rpm on 93.

    Detonation?!?

Is there a cheap, or DIY head cc measuring tool out there?
  15. Bolisk

    Detonation?!?

No I don't. The machine shop forgot to write it down. :mad May be worse that I know, because the engine had been rebuilt twice by the previous owner. Once when he spun a main bearing. Second one when he converted it to lt-1. Heads could be way down. I will test compression tommrow and...

    Detonation?!?

Just checked my notes. Pistons are TRW L2304 .030 over. The numbers were stamped into the dome of the piston.
  17. Bolisk

    Detonation?!?

Inital timing, with the vacuumed advance off and plugged, with dial back timing light was set to 12 degrees when I first bought the car. After valve job, and noticing the problem I retarded it to 10 then 08. I have to recheck the vaccume, but I think it was slightly lower than a normal l46...
  18. Bolisk

    Detonation?!?

Exactly as described. Car hot, all plugs out, screw driver in carb to WOT. Started at 1 and cranked engine with starter until needle stoped moving. I proceeded through all cylinders until I found one that was very low when compared to the others. At the time I was trying to diagnos a rough...
  19. Bolisk

    Detonation?!?

The bore is .030 over stock at I think 4.030 The stroke is stock LT-1 ??? Current head gasket is .041 thick with a 4.060 bore The head CC will probably be different for each cylinder. Remember, some machine shop guy hand clearanced the intake and exhaust valves for better "flow". This raises...

    Detonation?!?

I was under the impression that the lt-1 cam that I already have is plenty big for street use. Perhaps not. Secondly. Easier and hopefully cheaper to put thicker head gasket in. :) Having said that still need to try the other things mentioned in earlier posts.
