Help! rear axle fluid and posi fluid

I use and recommend using Lucas 85-140 gear oil, non synthetic. 1-2 bottles of Gm limited slip (posi) additive. Others have had good results with other oils but these are what I use and have it in street and strip vette diff's.

    2013 Carlisle Seminar

Hey Guys I just decided on this years seminar presentation. I think this year I will hold an open question hour covering the topics of the last 3 years of seminars: Steering boxes, IRS including diff's, posi tuning, rear bearings, 1/2 shafts, strut rods, etc. So if you are planning on going...

    Confused on brakes

All 65-82 vette calipers were lip seal type. O-rings are an aftermarket design used in vendor calipers. You won't know unless you open up the caliper to check.

    3.36 to 3.70 gears

The current availble 370 ratios are imported. The 373 has more teeth on the gears and Tom's are USA made.

    3.36 to 3.70 gears

If you truely have a close ratio 4 speed then it will be a dog with a low torque sb and 336 gears. BB torque would drive it but the CR trans had a 2.20 first gear vs the 2.56 of the WR trans. CR trans are really a road racing trans setup to keep the RPM's "close" in the power band during up/down...

Question: I want to pick up my first vette and I don't know where to begin.

Just saw the pic's. Muncies were not offered in '79 and an M22 certainly not. So either someone installed a "rock crusher" M22 trans or the original owner is clueless. If the 2nd then you better look real close at the car because there could be other things mis-represented on the car. I would...

Question: I want to pick up my first vette and I don't know where to begin.

Well being a college kid could be a challenge unless you have cash to support it. Course I had my first vette at 18 and rebuilt it, my son had his the night he graduated from HS and he rebuilt it. Now as to what year to get? that depends on what you like. Between the 2 you mentioned I would go...

    Differential Casting Numbers

That is correct it is a 10/18/63 casting used in a 1964 corvette. The thing that really confirms it as a 63 housing, by just that picture, is the front bracket hole is tapped 7/16-14 where as 65-79 housings had thru holes for both bolts. Good job

    Differential Casting Numbers

Here it is, this is a cleaned up diff I built for a guy- Now for you sharpies out there what year is this for?
  10. GTR1999

    Differential Casting Numbers

The casting # is on the lower LH side of the diff. A letter and 2-3 numbers- A 238 = Jan 23 1968 or 1978. If you have a 71 chances are someone blew up the original 68 posi case. The 63-64 & 65-69 cases were not the best. The 3's 4's were junk, the 5-9" not much better. The '71-9 cases were...

Super Storm Sandy and my 71 Corvette

I agree a car under salt water is going to need a lot of attention. I had a box shipped to me that was underwater from Katerina and it was/is siezed solid. It was easier to just replace the whole box with one I built. I would be looking at u-joints, bearings, brakes, etc that really causes...

    Question: 1978 rear end upgrade??

Depends really on what you want to do. Personally I would not make this swap since a properly setup C2 or C3 suspension is fine for most applications. The brakes, suspension, and drivetrain are very good for daily use if in operating condition. The later C3 drove better then the earlier solid...

North Dakota employee given 1972 Corvette for 40th anniversary

Very cool, a good example of what is missing today in the USA- a local worker giving his life for one company and USA made product and the company recognizing what they have/had for 40 years. What could be a better way to celebrate then with an American Icon- the corvette and worker.:upthumbs

    Rear Rotors

Here you go, call me with questions Gary Rotor replacement and Dial In - Corvette Forum : DigitalCorvettes.com Corvette Forums

    1982 rear rotor

I will add I never install vette rotors without bolting them on and dialing them I never like retaining them with just the lug nuts. Yes it takes longer to do but once the rotor is dialed and bolted on you're done, just like with the factory setup only you can remove it if need be. Some...

    1982 rear rotor

Jim The rotors were riveted to the spindles and front hubs then turned as an assembly to produce -0- runout. This worked great until someone removed the rotor to replace or face on a brake lathe. When the new or refaced rotor was installed, usually runout wasn't checked, and brake problems...

Brake Help Needed - RF locking up - pistons not stuck - what is it?

I believe it was the hoses, BF,and long time period. I would at least take the calipers apart and reseal them, flush the system, and replace the rubber hoses. Try to bleed the system when you take it out of storage next time, the Motive bleeder works the best for this. Good Luck

Just give me break if I don't recall everyones handle or name, I won't ignore you! I will have a demo diff to pull apart, showing a 10 bolt posi case, clutches, spring pack...

Warning! Rear Half Shaft u joints

You're right Mike, 50 years! Although I wasn't working on them when I was 3! Are you coming down to Carlilsle this year?

Warning! Rear Half Shaft u joints

Bending 1/2 shaft flanges as been a problem for the past 40 years with these cars. The 1350 joints are in the flange very tight as you found out. If you look on the side of the tubes you may find them crushed from a vise. Removing them from the car shouldn't be too bad, removing the joints can...
