    Question: Rochester QJ set up

If you have a non-original, commercially-rebuilt Q-Jet, you have at least a dozen problems that cannot be troubleshot via forum posts: Your carb needs a complete teardown, inspection, and replacement of all the damaged and altered parts that the commercial builder stuck you with. Drop me an...

    Question: too much carburetor ?

Keeping in mind that the stock factory Q-Jet installed on these cars was 750 cfm, I have never experienced that a 750 Holley is "too much carb." If you have mechanical secondaries, it is possible to "over-carb" the engine if you decide to slam into the secondaries at an rpm range which is too...

    Help! Epa sticker

The EPA stickers are a manufacturer's certification of compliance to the requirements, and it's not legal to reproduce them. A few people were doing it, and they were all prosecuted for doing so - some of the parts retailers got some stiff fines for distributing and selling them. There may...

    Help! 1972 LS5 (454) carb help PLEASE!!!!

Yes, it matters, and the book is wrong. The needle clip goes over the half-round protrusion on the rear edge of the bar. Putting it over the front edge can cause jamming of the needle and improper fuel control. Lars

    Strange Engine Dance

    1. A '68 Vette has a Q-Jet Carb. 2. If it's been modified with a Holley, a misadjusted float level won't cause the intermittent problem described. 3. A venting problem, or any other fuel system delivery problem, could, fact, cause the problems. If the fuel filter has been changed, or verified...

Question: Can I swap the base plates on a Quadrajet 7042202 and 7042217?

7042202 was used on every Chevelle and Malibu built in 1972 with a 350 and auto trans (as well as Vette). If you cut the arm, you'd be altering one of about 400,000 7042202 carbs ever built. That would be a tragedy. Those Malibu guys are known for paying HUGE bucks for restoration car parts...

Question: Can I swap the base plates on a Quadrajet 7042202 and 7042217?

You'd be better off just snipping the small block carb throttle lever - that's all Rochester did: the lever is the same, but snipped off. A high speed cutoff wheel works fine, and makes the cut look as good as the factory cut.

Rebuilding a Number Matching Big Block

Just a couple of comments based on personal experience and a lot of dyno testing: A hydraulic roller cam with an operating range up to 6500 is a complete waste: Hydraulic roller lifters aren't good for rpm over 6,000, so select a cam better matched to the limits of the lifters. Porting and...

    Help! 1972 LS5 (454) carb help PLEASE!!!!

Looks like a nice original carb - good candidate for rebuild and setup. You're just missing the choke pulloff and the secondary airvalve rod, along with all the divorced choke hardware. The pulloff is available from NAPA (I can give you the part number if you need it), but you'll have to find...

On to the next problem: C3 rear suspension -- again really that tough?

Actually, that's a really good way to destroy your steering box. The steering box can only be set up out of the car, on a workbench, unless you follow Jim Shea's specific in-vehicle adjustment procedure. This paper is available from either Jim or from me. If you simply crank down the center...

Rebuilding a Number Matching Big Block

Raising the compression to over 11:1 will definitely hurt the value. Pump gas won't support 11:1 compression with iron heads and the stock cam, so anyone interested in your car will need to un-do whatever you did to get the compression back down in the 10:1 range, unless you use octane boosters...

The Removel of the Motor an Trans

The engine comes out easily with the tranny attached - I've pulled a lot of BB engine/tranny assemblies out of C2s with no trouble. On the shifter, just pop the nuts off the shifter arms, and then pull the shifter-to-tranny atttach bolts from the top (inside the car). It'll take you 10...

Question: Rear height adjustment to level out rear of car from right to left?

One other thing you can check and tweak is the tightening sequence of the 4 bolts that "sandwich" the spring to the rear differential cover: If the bolts are not snugged down very evenly and incrementally, the spring can actually get installed a little cocked with one side lower than the other...

    383 Dyno Results

I drove the car with this engine in it only once, and it felt extremely strong and solid: The low-end and idle quality was almost stock-like, but the torque was brutal coming on at near off-idle rpm. In the mid-range, this thing will tear your head off if you keep you foot in it, and traction...
