Help! My 1979 Corvette wont start

79 uses an HEI- common problems- 1. Rotor- burns thru and no spark to the plugs. 2. Coil- they eventually die. 3. Module- easy to test- hook a 12v testlight from the distributor "TACH" terminal to ground, crank the engine. If the light flashes, the module and pickup coil are good. You might...

New Member - Corvette for Dad

Does anything light up at all? Headlights, interior when you open the door? Anything? Corvettes (C-3's) are notorious for having ground problems after 40 years. Check the cables- at the battery, the ground at the frame under the battery, and the ground jumper from the right motor mount at the...

    AC clutch

Another thing to look at is the pressure cycling switch- if the system has a low charge or the switch died, the computer is telling it to run (feeding power or giving it a ground) but has no way to tell if it is or not.

    Tranny hose size?

The trans cooler sees line pressure from the trans- it varies with road speed and load- if you have an 82, or have installed a 700-R4 trans, when the TCC locks up, the pressure to the cooler will jump about 125 psi. Makes for a great diagnostic tool too- visual proof the TCC has the capability...

    Tranny hose size?

The steel tube is 5/16. The 74 and the 77 I had both had short pieces of rubber line in both the inlet and outlet to the cooler just behind the radiator nipples. I replaced the rubber hoses on both cars with hose marked "Trans Cooler". GM used that hose for the cooler on lots of their front...

    Cooling fan

Figure out the diameter of the stock fan and hit the salvage yard. It does not have to be a Corvette specific fan. All it has to do is be close to the right diameter, have the correct bolt holes in the center and be on installed. It won't know if it's on a Corvette or a Caprice. And I agree...

    High Speed Setting on Heater

The distributor to coil is a single wire about 12 inches long, used on points ignition only. Probably one of the more common heater blower faults is exactly the one you have- the hi speed quits. Usually it's an easy fix, but it drives guys crazy trying to figure it out. The high blow relay is...

    Crankcase Vent Filter

The ones I have are pretty old school Mr. Gasket brand. And the nipple on the bottom fits a 3/4 grommet in the cover. IF you find one that's a little bigger, I'd bet they have the correct grommet- I'm thinking the hole in the cover is 7/8, the grommet seals there and the breather pushes in...

Help! Does anyone know if Vanacor's is still in business?

They used to be in Houma. edit: I just looked, the website is still up, (not that it means anything at all) http://www.vanacorscorvette.com/

    Crankcase Vent Filter

As you pointed out, the vent tube just won't fit quite right whan you swap anything- intake/carb/rocker covers. I've used a push in type breather for years with no problems. Same type they used on the pre-69 SBC's with the open crankcase vent system, the ones before PCV. Find one at your parts...

    Ignition switch

If you have a T&T column it's a little more complicated, but a standard column is an hour. Including beer drinking time. The link to Jim Shea's Steering column papers will tell you everything you wanted to know and more.:cool!:

Help! Electrical stuff. . .failing one by one. . .

I'll vote with GMjunkie- grounds. The core support is grounded to the rest of the frame/electrical system at the left front (if it close to my 69) and the forward lamp harness ground is on the front of the core support at the left front. There is nothing in the rules that says you can't run...

    Ignition switch

The switch is mounted on top of the steering column. Easy way is to remove the dash panel under the column and then the 2 bolts that hold the column support. The dimmer switch and ignition switches are both right there.

    Help! Tach cable broken?

Some of the MSD distributors use a different size square drive than the cable is. They supply a little sleeve that goes on the end of the cable. Without that sleeve, the cable rattles around inside the gear and won't drive the tach.

    Help! Dash Lighting

Potential 2 different problems- By "system check light" do you mean the check engine light or when you turn the key to start, just before the starter cranks the engine no lights come on or go off? The chime could be the key buzzer? And a wiring diagram ::: Index of /johdotukset

Mac hit that one-- see what your DMV requires. My part of the country, I can use year of manufacture plates- limited to 5k miles a year, and only to educational events, shows, or for repair. And the DMV could care less about any mods- all it has to be is legal. Safety items. Brakes, tires...
