Help! Oil Pressure guage tacking out!!

I'd say the sender. The gauge responds to the resistance in the circuit provided by the testlight. You could use a meter and check the resistance your testlight has. The GM gauges work from 0-90 ohms. Unhooked from the sender, the gauge sees an open circuit, so it goes full scale. The testlight...

    Chevy 366 Big Block swap

Other than a tall deck, a 366 would make a heck of an engine. The cylinder walls are between 1/2 and 3/4 thick so you could bore it way out there. Same basic structure as all of the Mk. IV big blocks, just a 10.2 deck. Everything will fit except the intake and distributor, but they make spacers...

Help! Engine rebuild and steering column on my 71

I can't help you much on the engine (I don't have a clue about the Baltimore/Washington area, but the steering column is pretty easy to DIY- especially if you're planning on removing it from the car. Just get a copy of Jim Shea's steering papers and go. The special tools you'll need are...

Help! Oil Pressure guage tacking out!!

Quick and dirty test- Unplug the sender and turn the key on. Gauge should zing right past full to the stop. Then connect a 12v testlight between the sender wire and a good ground. That should make the gauge drop to about 1/2 scale. I used that test for years when I was playing like a dealer...

    Wandering front end...

This is the FIRST place to look, (past your old tires). If the toe is set less than 1/8" it will make the steering feel "twitchy" at speed. Kind of re-defines sensitive. The proper way to adjust a steering box is with a torque wrench and the procedure in the shop manual. If it's adjusted by...

Question: What are these 2 handles used for???

They look kind of like security locks for T-tops

Help! 1982 Leaking Fluid - What Is It !

On the right rear corner of the trans is a data plate. You can get that and decode it to find out what year the trans is. GM did an update to the 700-R4 to help prevent trans fluid from coming out the vent. It was mostly a change to the design of the pump to case gasket, but there were a couple...

    Bad Engine? Thoughts?

If the oil looks like a milkshake, regardless of what the coolant looks like, the oil has water/coolant in it. Causes can be anything from a gasket to a crack. If I was just starting to dig for the problem, I'd drain the oil, leave the plug out, fill the radiator and pressurize the cooling...

    know thy enemy!! (mustang)

I'm really happy to see your reply YODA. At another forum I visit, if someone resurrects a thread that's a year old they get suspended for a few days. And I completely agree- sometimes that so-called "OLD" info can really help. Some of us (me) can't recall all the little cool tricks that I once...

is this total b.s. OR NOT?

There has to be a dent in the left side to clear the steering box. I can't remember if it's the #1 or #3 tube and I can't go look since I'm 2200 miles west of home.

What Octane do you need for a 427

You Sir, have a tremendous capacity for understatement!! I'm running 12.5:1 compression. I'm also running either VP110 or 100LL avgas. I back the timing up a little for the avgas, simply because I can't hear it if I start getting detonation. Prices being what they are, the avgas is just a bit...

Help! 1982 Leaking Fluid - What Is It !

THe green tint would lead me to think it's coolant. There are casting plugs, (commonly called freeze plugs), on the back of the block under the flexplate. I'd start with checking the coolant level and then a pressure test of the cooling system. THe back of the block can be viewed with a good...

    Another Steering Play

From the bottom with the wheels off the ground, look up at the steering linkage and push the front of the wheels apart with equal pressure on each side and see if and where anything moves. Then have someone turn the steering wheel while you watch the distance between the pitman arm and the...

    Ignition lock cylinder install

That's about it. THere is either a screw or a slot with a tab you have to push down and the pull the cylinder. Enough of me. Look up Jim Shea's papers on steering columns at: Jim Shea’s Steering Papers If it's, (really complete instruction), not here you can send him an email from the link on...

1981 Corvette ECM vs engine mods

Peter is right on with his description. Talk to your cam company and tell them this is going into an ECM controlled car. Other option is to pick the cam, get it installed, take vacuum readings, then talk to someone like Hypertech that does custom PROM programming. They can burn the PROM to...

    Important! Base timing on 81

The check engine light WILL flash constantly when the terminals are jumpered. Correct operation. GO back up this thread- there was a post on the sequence and how to count the flashes to figure out what codes are set, along with a list of codes. Remember- in 1981, the ECM/CCC system was really...

    Help! Brake still isn't working!

I'd be looking at the flex lines to the calipers too. They have been known to fail and either balloon when pressure is applied or internally fail and can block the fluid flow either way. Remember- the youngest C3 is still 30 years old.

    77 radio wiring question

The manufacturers have overly complicated radio wiring- you have the GM harmess, and you know what each color wire is for. The yellow wire in your factory harness is only powered when the key is "ON" or in the "Accessory" positions. From your description of the radio's wiring diagram, it appears...

    69 wheels will fit

I put 17x9's on my 69. I used 4.5 backspace and they all fit nicely. IT was real close on the trailing arms, so I put a 1/8 spacer on the rears. I've also got the GM flares so I have loads of room in the wheelwells. Tires are currently 295/40 rear and 275/40 front.

    Gauge(s) Malfunctioning

The connector on the passenger side between 6 & 8 cylinders is a temp switch. Also look at the rectangular connector on the firewall just to the right of and behind the distributor. It's teh starter extension harness- all the power for the car runs thru that one connector. It's known to...
