    1974 fuel guagr sending unit

Good start. Since the gauge does respond, now it's about accuracy. Check the resistance between the post on the sender (tan wire connection) and a good ground on the tank. GM sending units are usually between 0 and 90 ohms. I'm going from memory so if I'm backwards, someone will step in and...

~Can one safely tap electricty from the HEI-distributor's 12V./switched-wire to operate elect.-choke?

Link to a 1980 Wiring Diagram: http://www.nrjvette.com/johdotukset/Chevy%20Corvette%201980.pdf The tach filter on the print is shown just above the distributor. Anyway, it gives the OEM wire color so you at least get that in your hunt. When I'm chasing a problem like this, I print the...

    1974 fuel guagr sending unit

As you suspect, the black wire is the ground and the tan wire is for the sending unit. With the key on, and the tan wire disconnected, the gauge should go full scale to the right. If you have a 12v testlight, it will show some voltage- the bulb won't be full bright, but it wll glow. And with the...

    Uh oh! Possible head gasket?

If it's an automatic, the TH350 or TH400 has a vacuum line that ports into the intake right about where #8 cylinder is. If the modulator starts going away, the trans oil gets pulled right into #8 and will make your plug look funny. Pull the vacuum line and see if there's oil in it. Finding the...

GREAT!! Glad you got it up and on the street again. :thumb

    82 crossfire shift problems

The nut on the trans shift lever might be loose. The lever has a slot the fits over the shift rod and is held on with a nut. The nut get loose, the lever moves out far enough to disengage the tab on the rod, and no more shift. Every thing looks normal but it's not. The trans is a 700R-4. For it...

    Heater switch

Wiring to the high blow relay. Probably a melted connector. Turn the key on with the blower set to "hi", shake the wires to the relay. Poke around, it will appear. '' Wiring Diagram: http://www.nrjvette.com/johdotukset/Chevy%20Corvette%201978.pdf Edit- I just looked at that WDM for a '78. It...

    Electrical troublehooting

Odds are just the fusible link. And you are reasonably lucky-- GM started using a "Starter Extension Harness" about 1976(? maybe a little before) Just to the right of the distributor on the firewall is a 6 way connector- all the car runs thru that connector- THe other end goes to the starter...

    A.C. Compressor Busted; but.

Unless the clutch is seized no reason to not drive it. But I have to let you know that if the compressor has died, the entire system will be full of trash. You'll need to replace the orifice tube and dryer, and flush everything else. Lines, evaporator, condenser will all contain trash that will...

    Question: C3 fuse panel question

As MAC pointed out- both are handy and necessary tools. I also have a powered testlight (continuity tester) and a probe that is powered. When you touch a contact with it, it will light up green for ground and red for power.

    Question: C3 fuse panel question

I'm with Evolution1980 here. A 12v testlight is great for all sorts of quick testing and some troubleshooting, but even a simple Volt-Ohm meter will do that and loads more. They're not hard to use, other than sometimes getting the leads to stay where you want them- but there's all sorts of...

    Cold start choke question

Set the choke by pressing the gas pedal to the floor. One time sets the choke, but most guys hit it a couple of times. Crank, and as soon as it starts the choke pull off opens the choke slightly. I recall it's like 7* open, but that may be my old memory. As it warms up, the choke thermostat...

    Oil Pressure Reading

They could have installed the pump to cover a number of things. Worn bearings would be top on the list. At idle, just under 40 psi is not a real issue. I run over 40 at idle and 60-70 at 5000 RPM, but with the pump I have it's expected.

    Center Caps

I know one guy that used RTV and glued them on. The advantage to RTV is they can be removed, cleaned and then put back on.

    Rear Axles and Horsepower ?

The C3 rear will hold everything you can throw at it- until the tires stick. They can fail with 200 HP as easy as they can with 1000 HP. Just the 1000HP will be more spectacular.

Help! Clacking valve train driver side

Setting them cold at .021 and .024 will end up with the lash well below .020 when hot. What are the cam manufacturer's recommended settings? I see you used John's procedeure- what is it? I always set my BB at .024 and .026 hot- Intake as the exhaust closes, Exhaust as the intake opens. And by...

    Main bearing clearances???

Those clearances are really tight- even on an engine that will never see 5000 RPM much less 7500. I'd have to suggest that with the clearances that small it would be a good candidate to spin bearings. You won't be able to have enough oil film on the bearings to protect them. I've seen new...

    steering upgrade

Read Jim Shea's Corvette Steering papers at Jim Shea’s Steering Papers This guy is a retired GM engineer and I think he wrote most of, if not all of, the book. I think the Vette steering uses a different pressure regulator than the standard GM pump. The regulator is the fitting the hose goes...

    steering upgrade

GTR1999 probably has all the info to check/test your steering box to see if it needs help. Past that, fixing the leak and maybe replacing the lines might be the way to go. I've got a new set of lines for my 69, and the next time I pull the engine, I'm going to take a really close look at the...
