    Detonation?!?

JonR, 38 degrees does seem a whole lot. On a dyno, you have an advantage to experiment with one or two degrees change effect on engine performance. Have you thought of backing off a couple of base degrees? I mean, since you have a bit of time before you pull the cylinder heads. You are...

The car is packed and Europe awaits

Very cool and fortunate, Jack. :thumb I dig the 73 Vette. It is configured to an early 1970's flavor of culture Americana. The side pipes look sweet. I looked up the knowledgebase for a 73, but could not find if sidelines were an option by then. But all in all, Alain Vette captures the theme...

    Detonation?!?

Congratulations! It is a bit of an art and blind providence for someone like Mickey and JohnZ talk you through a "landing" on a runway from hundreds of miles away and using only a radar!!! Great job! You did all the work!

News: Man on the moon: Neil Armstrong's Corvette lands in Daytona

Great story and effort. :thumb So let me get this straight...the second owner bought it the next day and parked it with all the artifacts inside all this time until February? If so, then he has served the nation's interests superbly. It almost sounds as if the second owner stepped forward to...

    Important! Base timing on 81

Al, the following link takes you to an image of the system's diagnostic circuit check https://skydrive.live.com/redir?resid=9E77F659449DD457!1581&authkey=!AC4sSf4vq9HUi7E This other one can help you troubleshoot the engine-check light...

    Detonation?!?

John, Thanks for the remedial material. It was well written and you did a great job. :) I was aware of the principles in the article you presented me, but from a different source (one of the books that Dr.Jacobs wrote), but as always, it is good to read other sources to get a well rounded...

    Important! Base timing on 81

Al, Check the 10 amp fuse for the computer (upper-right side of fuse panel) if no light what so ever. Also, try it with terminal "E" grounded (under tge ashtray) before turning the ignition to "on" with engine not running.

    Detonation?!?

Mickey, you are 100% correct. I meant to come back and add a "p.s." to my comments because I noticed I did not answer his question, but had to roll to work :( But, I guess I was asking if he wanted to do that without seeing where 7" of vacuum is on RPM's for his motor because let's say it is at...

    Detonation?!?

Bolisk, If you are using the stock distributor, then it was not meant to reach 36* at 3,000 RPM. Your key is to play with the "ported" signal going to the canister. Those stock settings you posted earlier guide you towards this. I sometimes "forget" that 3,000 RPM is not even close to WOT. And...

    Detonation?!?

Bolisk, Barring a mechanical issue with the distributor (vacuum canister not connected to mechanism), you might just need stronger springs or lighter weights (like Mickey suggested) to help hold back the advance till it is needed. Relatively low engine speeds/load will require less advanced...

The way the factory meant for'em to be

Jon S, That is a remarkable current mileage. I bought mine in 1985, with 14K original miles, but added about 140K miles, and with a frame-on restoration, she still runs pretty well. Even though she developed a timing problem while on my way to a cross-state trip, she limped back but brought me...

    Important! Base timing on 81

Al, when you turn the ignition key to the on position (just before hitting the starter to turn), the instrument's lights come on and the check engine light comes on. This is the self test for the check engine light. Also know that the computer schedules advance spark timing. So by shining a...

Al, The connector is that lime green connector between the air cleaner and the air injector pump. :D

    Gauge(s) Malfunctioning

If the wire you are talking is relatively heavier gage (12 GA), and if it is grouped with the starter, then it is likely to be the wire leg that connects the engine electrical fan temperature switch. When the coolant temperature reaches 250 (or so, I believe), it will complete ground and the...

    Important! Base timing on 81

Is the sensor on the intake with a wire connected to it or a hose? If a wire, then get the computer codes to see if they suggest a problem with it. The one with the hose to it is a thermal vacuum switch. It waits to reach temperature before it allows a vacuum signal somewhere. Have you checked...
