    Original L81 engine pic's..

Peter, Your Vette probably has a leak ahead of the oxygen sensor. Either at the donut or at the exhaust manifold. If using headers, it would still be the same situation, except the likely place would be where you join two surfaces/pipes. P.s. I am also NOT stalking you. :chuckle:chuckle

    Poor MPG. Tune-up suggestions?

Tattor, I am willing to bet that if you followed fig. 6E1-17-Chart 1 (page 6E1-12), you'll find that the left side of the chart will reveal the problem. A steady dwell of 10 deg or less can be isolated with this chart. By the way, when it says to,"choke engine", what it means is that you cup...

    Poor MPG. Tune-up suggestions?

Tattor, Maybe I have been confusing you. It is not that the EGR is inop at idle entirely. Once the coolant temperature reaches 195 degrees, the computer de-energizes the EGR solenoid. This allows application of vacuum signal to the EGR valve; however, that vacuum signal may be the minimum...

    Poor MPG. Tune-up suggestions?

Tattor, Yes, the EGR is not activated at idle (see post #32). We were trying to figure out your Vette's high consumption cause. So sealing the EGR was on the list. But you seemed distracted by the rpm change issue. :) I recommend you take the Vette next opportunity and drive it and see if...

    V.S.S. (Vehicle Speed Sensor)

There are two plugs near the ash tray, that "Y" to the left of ash tray. Except that the one that connects to the VSS, is closer (and therefore a longer lenght of wire) that reaches closer to the left side of radio. So one leg of "Y" connects to diagnostic check connector. There is also...

    V.S.S. (Vehicle Speed Sensor)

Readers, I just noticed that you have a 1982 Vette. Mine is 1981, so perhaps that changed the location for VSS. (I was going to mention that manual transmission 81 Vettes don't have VSS, and that's when I noticed you have an 82). :)

    Poor MPG. Tune-up suggestions?

Yes, the gasket on that plate (between manifold and plate) is likely deteriorated and leaking. Use a scrapping spatula (flat piece of metal with a handle and a narrow edge use to spread putty or scrape paint or pry in between two surfaces). if the valve is new, and the gaskets are replaced...

    Poor MPG. Tune-up suggestions?

Tattor, The EGR valve has that plate shaped the same as the base of the valve. The valve takes one gasket and the plate takes another. This should seal your EGR. once you attain the 20 seconds or better test, your Vette's engine should pick up engine speed. Once you adjust down the curb idle...

I was mistaken about the picture i thought took. But here is some info.

    Poor MPG. Tune-up suggestions?

Well do a consumption drive. Fill the tank, reset the trip-o-meter, and drive it a couple of gallons worth. Then, fill the tank again, and divide the miles on trip-o-meter by the fuel taken. See if she is doing better. :) The tackle the next problem. :)

    Poor MPG. Tune-up suggestions?

Tator, i am am sorry for not examining (only looking) at these picture before. But the hoses for your EGR need replacement. Remember, vacuum signal is always present on to these hoses. So you are driving around with a vacuum leak. That will drive fuel consumption. Now, the two hose...

    Poor MPG. Tune-up suggestions?

You may be right. Heck, a broken diaphragm on the EGR valve, in effect, is bleeding vacuum signal, so once you can declare the EGR is or is not the problem, that will determine our next step. Since timing, curb idle, and the rest of the adjustment affect the engine, we'll have you set timing...

    Poor MPG. Tune-up suggestions?

Once you are able to determine that the EGR valve is not leaking and operating correctly, I would recommend we look at timing, engine curb idle speed and such. To make sure engine is at the right point to let the closed loop system do its thing.

    Poor MPG. Tune-up suggestions?

Tattor, I am also not very worried about your RPM gauge dropping 200 RPM's. The tach in the Vette is not designed for accurately adjusting an engine. It lags a bit behind of what really is going on in small increments of engines speeds to enhance its accuracy during large increments. Also...

    Poor MPG. Tune-up suggestions?

tattor, The EGR valve is inop at idle and at deceleration (the computer detects these engine regimes, and turns-on/off, vacuum to the EGR through the solenoid), so don't let that detract you. Honestly, it is a pain, but it will be worth it when your Vette starts running great. Vacuum being...

Question: How Low Can We Go? :)

Yes. I was not driving it hard, but normal and at speed limit. Now I know that it will yield about 26 miles. But I needed the light for long drives. When you zone out and miss looking at the gage, the light will light up and say,"Hey, moron, you need gas!" Lmao!!! Actually, that would not be...

    V.S.S. (Vehicle Speed Sensor)

It is in the console somewhere. I want to say between the shifter and the ashtray. I have been looking for an image I have somewhere. The damn thing was on the way when I was swapping the shifter's cut out for an over drive TH200-4r

Question: How Low Can We Go? :)

Well folks, i got the problem fixed. Finally! you guys are going to love this lol. It turns out, that when the module was installed upside down (albeit, it is round, it has a sticker with an arrow. The pointing arrow should be aimed at the top of the dash while being installed (not pointing...

    Poor MPG. Tune-up suggestions?

I forgot to mention that if you are spraying in between the intake manifold and the cylinder heads, then that would likely be an intake manifold leak. :)Good luck, buddy.
