Sounds like you have two distinct problems....a carb issue and a valve seal issue.....check your oil every week for 4 weeks and meaure how much its burning....a little puff or two isnt major but if...
Almost sounds like an elctronic choke issue. Or the carb is leaking fuel while sitting into the manifold and when you start her back up it loads up and puffs black smoke....

Thats 2 and a half years of cleaning , rebuilding, and repainting, new wiring harnesses, vacumn lines etc.....
Find a good body shop with a newer frame machine and have them check all the points. Our delaership jsut spent $145K on our new machine and it is awesome.
I dont know what the difference is but when I rebuilt my M20 behind my 420 hp 350....My guy stayed with a 7/8".....Sorry I dont have an explanation though.....:upthumbs

Something like a 74 is going to be hard to compare to any 74 on Ebay. I would say a nice original 36K mile 74 on Ebay would end up in the $9K to 10K range. So dont get to excited by that. Color may have something to do with it, brown with beige isnt the most popular color however a very nice...

I get popping out of my 40 series flowies but then again my engine isnt exactly stock.....thinking about switching to 50 series to tone her down...kinda splatty sounding....
