I ran an HEI on my 76 pick-up for 20 years without touching the timing. GM engines are designed to run at 36* advance at 2,500RPM, period. When running under light load, they can take up to 52*. a 16* vacuum unit automatically controls this.

Coolant sensor/ Don't believe everything you read. Okay. Doing diagnostics today. The book says if the coolant sensor reads over 1,000 ohms, replace it. It read 2,260 ohms. Bought a new GM one today. $42.00. Guess what. 2,260 ohms. WTF? Anyone else notice this?:confused

    Wiring Help needed

I am doing computer diagnostics today. If I see it, I'll let you know. Pull the driver's side console cover, the one with carpet. See where it goes. E should def. be "chasis ground". When you read this 12 volts, where are you measuring from? Batt ground? Where?

Okay Cris. Do me a favor. Do you have a dial back timing light? Chart the curve for me sometime. Then I can make an edified decision. Idle 500 1,000 1,500 2,000 2,500 3,000 Fair enough? (P.S. Name one performance/race car with an 81 computerised carb)

    Bonehead move with ecm?

Okay. Two places to check(That I know of). Engine ground. Pass side, block to frame. This one is rather large. Front of carb. There are two wires to the M/C , pass side, a green clip for testing dwell, and a ground wire to the carb. It should be black.

That's a point we will never agree on. If you change to an earlier quadrajet, and put a proper curved vacuum HEI in there, Big difference. Cam? GM 181. Gears? 3.73.. This puts them back to where they were before. 3.08 and 2.79 coupled with ECM is about MILAGEand EMISSIONS, not PERFORMANCE.

If you do not have smog inspections, pull that crap off. Cheapest bang for the buck, change rear gearing. It probably needs going thru anyhow. After that, change the cam.,then...........................;LOL

    Bonehead move with ecm?

The choke is not controlled by the ECM. The only commonality here is the engine and ECM grounds. Start there.;)

    Bonehead move with ecm?

:ugh Wow. You definetely have a wiring problem. I have never heard of that one.

    It finally happened to me!

I would still change the solenoid again.;)

    It finally happened to me!

The starter brace has a small shield between the manifold and solenoid. However, the main root of the problem is the solenoid. Replace it with a Delco unit. Should solve it.

Thaanks Danny. Guys, if you can find this on E-Bay, buy it. It is only for the 81 computer systems. I guess the schematic page did not come thru.:L
