Follow-up to Cam & Valvetrain Dilemma... Got Engine Started!

Ralph: JohnZ's timing info is good ... recommend you get familiar with it. Another gent named Lars Grimsrud also published good timing info & vac can ID-specs. Both gents' info quite helpful & reliable. Check this before setting up timing: ... VERIFY that your timing mark is truly at TDC when...

Follow-up to Cam & Valvetrain Dilemma... Got Engine Started!

Late Saturday afternoon in MD? ... guessing it was at least 90* outside during breakin? Maybe you needed to feed the front of car with a good fan? Also sounds like the timing wasn't right for the breakin ... maybe too high ... maybe vac can pulling in too much timing ... dunno? Was it 240* with...

    Worth restoring????????

As a third party that would buy if price were right ... if it's an 82 ... and based on how you've described its neglect w/ 8 yrs outside ... I would pay no more than $3K ... probably less if it is an 81.

    Compression Ratio & Pump Gas?

Jake: ZZ4 has more cam (than energizer) that helps bleed off CR and has aluminum heads that help reduce knock (WPS2 are iron) ... apples & oranges. What is Jake's original motor (&CR)??? if L48 (dished 4VR piston) or L82 (flat 2VR piston) makes a difference ...if block has ever been machined...

    Header / Alternator Dilemma

IMHO, the OE cast iron-steel one that looks like this: http://corvetteactioncenter.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=10592&d=1151373327 ... looks like Bill's & Ralph's ... is the best one to use ... far sturdier than the OE stamped bracket on earlier C3 ... and the aftermarket adjustable...

    Torque Converter question

Regarding OE stock convertors ... IN GENERAL ... the larger the convertor diameter the lower the stall speed .... & the smaller the higher. A 400 convertor is usually larger than a 350 convertor.

    Dyno Results

Congrats:upthumbs Would be nice if you showed comprehensive list of motor parts: heads, cam, lifters, rods, pistons, crank, intake, carb, bore size, block decked, heads milled, head gasket .... etc. A copy of both dyno graph & table would be cool too. Jack:gap

    Help! Roller Rocker Valve Lash

Jake: I'm making an assumption here that you're working with hydraulic flat tappets. As you're "removing the play" ... Are you sure you're not collapsing the lifter? If you adjust the lifter so that it's collapsed ... and then it extends as it fills with running oil pressure & pumps up ... it...

    Need help with cooling diagram

There's where your best answers will come from ... the local engine dyno I use differs in that we run our own fuel pump. Ask your guys about all the stuff you don't know because it's already clear they do it differently than we do. Are they gonna have the parts on hand to tune your carb &...

    Need help with cooling diagram

Is this for an engine dyno (motor out of car)? ... or ... chassis dyno (measured at drive tires)? If engine dyno ... typically, only cooling connected to dyno is single large water pump inlet and single large t'stat housing outlet (same places your rad hoses connect to motor). Typically, the...

    SBC Harmonic Balancer Questions

You'd pull your hair out if you were to spend a weekend in our pits ... alotta guys call that thing a "pulley" ... my best buddy who's a VERY experienced mechanic calls it a "harmonical balancer" ... he's my best bud so I don't say squat.

    Whats my Engine

If the oil dipstick is on passenger side, the block is probably MY1977 or newer.

    SBC Harmonic Balancer Questions

Are you sure that "slippage" isn't simply slack in timing chain causing this? Even newly installed chains will get slack in them soon after run for a bit. Or ... maybe the rotator tool's holes are a bit larger than pulley bolts and the tool is slipping at the bolts? 6.75" will work fine ...

    Oil Questions?

Illinois climate, 79K miles, no racing ... any name brand non-synthetic 10-40 & filter will be fine. With 79K there may be a bit of clearance in motor ... so 15-40 diesel truck oil or 20-50 performance oil may be good for hottest summer months. Don't waste your time on high-dollar synthetic oil...

    NIGHTMARE..

Have only seen above pics of Nightmare ... beautiful piece! :confused But ... to me ... its power seems based on a Big Block with a Blower? ... neither of which have anything to do with nascar. Seems about 40 years back BBC were permitted for 1 or 2 seasons; then quickly banned ... don't...
