    Valve Cover refinishing...again!

P.S. I also had my plenum, tudes, and manifold blasted. Any suggestions on finishing these before reinstall? I was considering a good cleaning with a mild solvent and then perhaps a coat of high temp clear on the tudes and plenum to keep the staining to a minimum. Joe

    Valve Cover refinishing...again!

Does anyone have an opinion on using JB weld like bondo and filling some of the defects that paint won't? It has good high temp properties and that is what I would worry. I imagine as the covers begin to stain again there will be funny spots all over but considering where I started it will...

    Complete Auto Trans Fluid Change

Filter? I wonder if there was a problem with the filter being damaged in the flush and the media damaging the system?

    Valve Cover refinishing...again!

I know this is a "whipped to death" topic, but I ran into a situation that I am looking for info on. I had my covers bead blasted and the result is...wow. There seems to be a lot of defects in the covers that look like casting issues. Has anyone found this to be the case? I am not sure how to...

    Stupid question # 427

And now a little humorous light on the conversion subject. CONVERSIONS MADE EASY For those who thought the hardest part of Physics101 was the constant conversion from MKS or CGS units to English units, here are some useful English system conversions: Ratio of an igloo's circumference to...

    Stupid question # 427

I sorta figured that all the GEN I would be the same, but was nervous to charge on cleaning out holes and threads without more confirmation. I am reading the same, but got spooked on the 1.75 pitch when I was checking. Thanks. Joe

    Stupid question # 427

Selim, Having grown up in the era when there was going to be a conversion to metric by the government, I recall the real confusion. Like most attempts at converting slowly, there was resistance from industry as the tooling cost would have been high. Instead of a clean break, I believe a...

    Stupid question # 427

First, thanks for the feedback. Second, there is a numbering system for my stupid questions so that if the # gets really big, I will be billed by the question! Third, I used a 5/8" socket to remove the bolts which makes them SAE (I think) but I am always nervous as I believe that there is very...

    Stupid question # 427

What size are the head bolts? Are they SAE 1/2-14 thread pitch or are they metric M??-1.75 thread pitch? I am believe the block stuff is standard and the other stuff is metric, but I don't know and do not want to run the wrong tap/die down a hole or up a bolt! Thanks, Joe (AKA Chief stupid...

    Cleaning the head mating surface

Relief Thanks for the info, I was not sure if that was the true meaning of "clean." I am a bit of a literalist so that was driving me nuts. I have the material off and will begin reassemble soon! Thanks Joe

    Cleaning the head mating surface

I have my heads off (had a valve job and they look great BTW) and am ready to reinstall. I am trying to clean the surface of the block face and have a black burntish color that does not seem to want to budge with mineral spirits and elbow grease using a very soft steel wool. Any suggestions...

    Bead blasting/chemical cleaning

Thanks very much for the quick comment. I am ready to take them to the guys who did my heads and was not sure it was a good idea. I am very excited as my heads came back looking new! I had to ask the guy if he had lost mine! Thanks again, Joe

    Bead blasting/chemical cleaning

Has anyone bead blasted their intake hardware (plenum, tubes, manifold)? I have my upper appart and want to clean things up. The tubes and plenum have what looks like oil spots on them (kinda speckles) which I have scrubbed with a wire brush in a hidden area and made a little difference. I...

    Removing Heads (86 AL)

I am going for a rebuild on the heads and no other work at this time. I was thinking that I wanted to keep the original heads as original as possible. I may buy another set in the future when I can afford some nice AFR heads or some such. Thanks for the chat. Joe

    Removing Heads (86 AL)

V..V..V is for VICTORY! Last night I got the boogers off! I had to do a little more prying in the valley and out they came. I was a little timid at first and think with a little more umph, they popped off. Thanks for all the advice! This place is the greatest for the first time shade tree...
