    Yea, I guess the ECM is just looking for a number on that address line. Get a reading out its comfort zone and it causes trouble. If it's been failing for a while you wouldn't notice the drop in performance so much. Then getting it back in spec, you really notice an improvement. ;)

    After reading Moonunit's post... made me think. Hearing the 'crack' could have been a hose busting and blowing coolant on the exhaust manifold. Or... could be a freeze plug in the head 'popped' out. Before spending the $$$, try tracking down the leak yourself. At least you should have it...
