Putting in a new Camshaft...any warnings, words of wisdom etc...

There are good packages from both Edelbrock and Holley that will easily give you the required 400+ hp. I used the Edelbrock Performer RPM kit, although I found the cam a bit to much for the street, to be fair though their cataloge does say for use in lightweight cars. Holley do the a similar...

Putting in a new Camshaft...any warnings, words of wisdom etc...

Fred, If you put in to much cam with the standard drive train you will end up with a car that is unpleasant to drive maily due to big cams have poor low speed drivability. Most of the action is in the 3000rpm plus bracket and with the stock set up you cant take proper advantage of a bigger cam...

Putting in a new Camshaft...any warnings, words of wisdom etc...

One other consideration if you are running with a standard converter and 3.08 gears is not to be tempted by "TO MUCH CAM" your nice drivable Vette will intantly be turned into a dog over night and you will end up very dissappointed. J.

Putting in a new Camshaft...any warnings, words of wisdom etc...

Have a look at Comp Cams Tech pages, there is a wealth of information that will help you understand all about cam selection and valve trains. It is geared around their product but even so the is some very good info. I would also suggest a quick call to your chosen supplier and run your ideas...

What kind of times mikght I expect?

The guy who had the 78 S/A had 17 billet Centrelines and on the rear he had 275/40 Dunlop`s which fitted again with no problems. You might want to carefully check out the offset of your intended purchase to be a 100% sure before you buy. Yokohama are good tyres in the dry but depending on which...

Steeroids Rack n Pinion. Want one? Just Call...

Thanks, any info would be usefull. I had a look around and there is some nice stuff for sale but they all say for drag race only. What goes around comes around, the first street car I saw running a 10 second quarter over here in the UK was a big block Camaro with a twin turbo set up on it...

What kind of times mikght I expect?

Hi Josh, The 295`s went straight on the original wheels without any mods and the standard trailing arms. No problem and although they are a tight fit no rubbing either. They are BFG`s and my only concern is the low speed rating they have, they are also 400 tread wear so I will never use them up...

Steeroids Rack n Pinion. Want one? Just Call...

Hi, I will have a look around on a couple of searches, did the pump and the electric drive come as a complete unit. I noticed the drive was a Steff. Cheers J.

What kind of times mikght I expect?

Hi, I ran a best of 13.8 and had a best of 104mph with a clutch that was on it`s way out and my combo is similar to yours. I would have thought that with the good clutch low 13`s should be no problem without gas and 12`s with gas would be easy money. J.

Steeroids Rack n Pinion. Want one? Just Call...

Hi, I had a look at your site, nice engine !!. Where did you buy the electric water pump it looks good, do you have a part number for it and can it be used for limited street work or is it a dragrace only item. I wanted to buy an electric pump mainly to tidy up my engine but had conflicting...

    exhaust questions

Hi I ran my 81 for a while with no cats or mufflers and it was loud, if you are planning to use it more than just occasionally you`d better buy some industrial duty ear defenders. I soon got tired of it being so loud and most of my immediate nieghbours wouldn`t speak to me. The other minor...

Richmond Six speed, Help me figure out how to pay for it!

I`m sure this has been answered before But what are the problems with a late model Vette or F-Body six speed if it is just the overdrive facility you are after. ??? J.

    try not to laugh

Forgot about that picture, it`s a while since I updated or checked my site. Driving on the wrong side of the car is not so bad. I`ve had numerous left hookers over the years. The thing that get most people is the stick shift. Mostly all American cars that end up over here are automatics so...

    try not to laugh

Unfortunately all the pictures are taken from a slight angle so it is difficult to show it properly. I had the hood off the car and never really noticed how much off it was. It was only when I had it at my friends garage to cut it that he asked me if I was sure at which point I went back and...

Richmond Six speed, Help me figure out how to pay for it!

Mike, To get the tranny you could p**s off Mrs 69MyWay big time, sell up, take your half and place the order. A bit extreme but it depends how desperate you are. I`m 99% of the way there on this one :( but with a bit of luck there might be enough left over for a trip to the 50th. :beer...

    try not to laugh

Hi, When I did mine I went through the whole range of ideas, from a blower to tunnel rams and scoops. I did initially want a 6-71 blower but you just can`t see where you are going and I am already at a disadvantage here - wrong side of the road and wrong side of the car - the same with the...

    Plug Wires

A couple of the plugs on my Edelbrock heads are very close to the headers on my 81 and I went through four sets of wires in the first few times I ran it. I tried various sets from cheap AC Delco to the present ACCEL 300+ sleeved wires which cost me an outrageous $120 over here. I can honestly...

    crossfire engines

There is nothing basically wrong with the crossfire if it is set up properly and looked after. I had an early Z28 Camaro with it, it never missed a beat and was just quick enough not to get embarrassed to often at the stop lights. There is a guy at our local track with an 84 that has run low...

Big block vs. small block fuel efficiency?

Hi, "Efficiency" and "Big Block" don`t go in the same sentence :L I used to religously check fuel consumption at one time and when I had a fairly standard 80 4spd a few years ago and it averaged 17mpg during the time I owned it. My current 81 is doing around 10 - 12 mpg. In the 80 on a cruise...

    New guy with 81

Hello and Welcome, You can do as you thought and bypass the ECM but you do need an old style HEI. You wouldn`t need to change the intake just find a carb that didn`t have the computer hook up from an older Chevy. Not to many dollars if you find some good used parts and it would get it running...
