Not an expert, but I will share what I know. I agree it is the EGR valve relay. If it has failed in such a way that the EGR valve is always open, It will cause the car not to idle. You should be able to pull the vacuum hose going to the EGR valve (round disk just to the rear of the relay)...
I am not an expert on choke operation, but I will share what I know -- First, the ECM has no control over the choke at all.
1) the choke goes to the high idle step by depressing the gas pedal all the way. When you depress the pedal all the way, see what part of the linkage is not allowing it...
If the ECM is operation and the PROM is in wrong, there will be a code that the PROM is wrong (51 if memory serves me right) Check engine light will still work properly
Good luck
I have never heard anything bad about an aftermarket computer. I dont see the need to spend 3x the money to keep the original. But originality might be worth that to you.
You can still get a PROM from Hypertech, costs more than the computer.
There are seperate codes for lean and rich. I attached the 13 trouble shooting tree from the service manual. For the cost of an oxygen sensor, I would just change it and see if the code clears itself. -- If not it is probably a wiring issue.
The light going on and off is OK -- It just...
FANTASTIC!!!! -- Glad things are starting to get sorted.
Don't be dissapointed if the check engine light goes on -- the codes will now lead you to the issue, and most are easily sorted out.
Now for the original issue -- lack of power and hesitation -- Check the timing, connector on the...
Great -- always nice to when things start working as expected. Be careful of the PROM. Make sure it is not in backwards. The Pins can bend under or out when you insert the prom and it is hard to see it after you insert it. Also -- be VERY careful if there is a bent pin, you might be able to...
I cant help you here because I have not changed mine yet. Let us all know if you think there is any difference. I am thinking of just going with a new high flow cat on the single exhaust. Assures that the cat is breathing well, which I doubt now with my original 30 year old cat.
If you clear the codes, get the 12's and you still get the codes 23 and 54, I put the troubleshooting guides below. They both are pointing to the M/C Solenoid. You can still buy the solenoid and it can be replaced with the carb still on the car, but you will need to take the top off the carb.
First -- Of course the check engine light can come on continuously -- if the error that causes the warning is continuous. If the error is intermittent, the light will be intermittent, but the code will be saved. Sorry if I mislead you.
Clicking in the Carb -- You can hear it when you short...
The carb should not be clicking when you turn on the key. It will click when you try to read the codes.
I need to jump the two pins closest to the driver side (left side) (on my connector, there are two pins that have a slot between them)
There is no 41 code on a 81 vette.
All codes should...
A bad ground can cause all sorts of unusual behavior of things. Do yourself a favor and assure that all the grounding issues are thoroughly addressed before proceeding in debugging anything else.
The original choke wire is green, goes across the front of the carb and connects to the t-fitting on the fender wall shown in the picutures below. I have my wires wrapped to try to make the engine look a little tidier. Normally, the green wire should be quite visible. (the schematic says it is...
You have the wrong one, any of the big name auto supply stores should be able to give you a direct replacement for a reasonable price ($20). I got mine from autozone, plugged right in
I will check the choke wire when I get home tomorrow You are right it should be routed from the drivers side across the front of the Carb and then onto the choke. Did he say why he was working on the choke? If you are worried that the choke is not working we can check it easy enough. Until...
Something came to me while I was riding my motorcycle (strange stuff can come to you on a bike)
Your mechanic should have been setting the timing with the connector to the Distributor disconnected. This puts the HEI into a bypass mode and eliminates any computer inputs. The timing should...
Let us know what happens with the new computer. There is a lot of help here to sort it out once it starts acting as expected
Another note, it is a misconception that the 1981 computer "learns". It does not. Once the temperature reaches 180 it should go into closed loop. Driving the car...
