    81 Pinion Seal Question

I spent waaaaay too much time driving around comparing 'pinion seals'. The $39.00 Timken seal (made by National) was no different than the $11.00 seals made by CR/SKF However...the beefy OE seal (faintly stamped) was made by 'National' The one I got, National ($11.00) is nothing special...but...

    81 Pinion Seal Question

Like I mentioned prior...I always thought CR/SKF were really quality or oe equivlant. I was shocked to see the questionable SKF seal. Unless they offer a cheep version and I'm not locating the better one?

    81 Pinion Seal Question

I haven't been able to find a HD seal like the one GM installed. The SKF is only $15.00 (from Nappa) but again it feels cheap and uses thin metal. My local Auto Zone said they have a Timken for $39.00 I'll have to go check it out.

    81 Pinion Seal Question

The OE seal that came out was quite solid, heavy and beefy...looks like the 'Timken Seal' Summit is selling here > http://www.summitracing.com/parts/tmk-5778v/overview/ Today I looked at a SKF Pinion Seal below and it was wimpy looking...I always though CR/SKF were good seals...

    Got Bad News...

Ok, so yokes WILL be replaced, but where to get them is the question...I know I DON'T want parts reconed from Loanstar...and that seems to be where the majority all come from, or "someone has a friend that recons them"...how's that for an answer! Bearing cap looked like it had a crack, it...

Retailers Who's Your Favorite and Why?

Dr rebuild...seems like a neat place! Actually so does 'Wilcox'! I'll give them both a call tomorrow...I've got questions!

Retailers Who's Your Favorite and Why?

LOL or, people could just list them here! I don't frequent many forums, usually do a drive-by once in a while on Performance Boats, Harley stuff, older Ford/Diesels and of course this place. Not looking to 'Tar & Feather' anyone, but recent searching revels an abundance of newer Corvette Parts...

    Original L81 engine pic's..

Hey Peter, hope you don't mind that I brought this pic up but...I'm trying get a good look at your Stub Axle and it almost appears there is what looks like a black, coin type surface ontop of the actual Axle. Question, is that black area the "hardened tip" that gets put on the axle-end by weld...

    Got Bad News...

Both have the same exact spiral, I tend to think it's there to draw-in oil between the center-shaft and axle tip. Maybe something they added between 80-82? I've also heard 'usually' the stub axles wear and not the center shaft...maybe not in my case?

    Got Bad News...

Yoke Ends-Pass/Fail? *For a 80-82 I have no idea what recondition Yokes will look like...I would hate to spend money on yokes when mine may very well be fine. Anyone know for sure if the raised area I have on the Stub Axles are still usable? The oil spiral can clearly be seen. From the clip...

    Got Bad News...

Thanks for that Peter, but what are you calling the "carrier front support"? "Pinion preload is 6-9 inch/lbs."...is that turning 'just the Pinion' or with the diff fully loaded with yokes installed? It appears my pinion nut is center-punched in several places to lock it on. BTW, removing my...

Retailers Who's Your Favorite and Why?

What's your favorite retailer/parts supplier, and why? Quality, Price, Shipping? Over the years there sure seems to be a LOT more venders! Ecklers...last time was mid 80's for a steering Control Valve Corvette Paramedics (somewhat local to me 40 miles away) ...headlight-door parts Mid...

True, I just didn't want to mess with those bearing caps at all! Do you know the torque rating for the bearing-cap nuts? Thanks, Ray

    Got Bad News...

Thanks for the feedback, Peter. I do believe my stub-axles are ok to reuse. This diff is fighting me tooth and nail. Had to grind-off maybe .005 from a Ring-Gear tooth the get the center-pin to clear...but a bur around the center-pin from the wear marks is STOPPING it from coming out all the...

    Got Bad News...

Well, it's good thing I cracked it open. *At a quick glance, the center-pin took the worst hit, there are clear wear/flat marks (almost like a hex head nut) around the pin where at times it wasn't rotating. However, I can easily rotate the center pin with a finger. *The stub-axles still have a...

    Got Bad News...

I so appreciate the feedback fellas...I'm so trying to understand 'my' 1981 diff. The last diff I was in was my 10:10 1969 Chevelle > 12-bolt posi and that was back in 1975! What worried me about the 'close' yoke was...I read that a wearing stub shaft/center pin will allow the yoke will grind...

    Got Bad News...

It's out! The front diff mount was a busted gooey mess, know wonder I could hear it 'hit' when I put the car in reverse. I honestly thought I would see the tell-tale sign of leaking fluid from at least one of the three seals...nope. The oily, mess all over and under the car, was either from...
