I just went through a huge amont of diagnostic to fix a problem on my 85. Do you get a check engine light??? That is crucial before we go further. Also, do you hear the engine "PING" when this is happening...or any black smoke out of the pipes?

Nope, no driveshaft strap. I have some pretty wide tires on the car now, but not so sticky. It smokes them on a brake torque at 2000 RPM like they are not even connected to the ground! I think you 36 will be just fine.
