The switch on the clutch pedal can keep the starter engaged
Locate it and when the problem occurs unplug it and see if the starter disengaged

My guess is that the problem is under the hood
When in reverse 2 thing's happen,
1 is the reverse light circuit is powered up and we all know that has nothing to do with it, unless Mikey is correct
2 the engine torque is backwards meaning the passenger side is lifting which in turn is...
They may not cover clutches but they need to cover their work!
I would be surprised if the clutch it self was bad.
Probably a flywheel surface issue

Grand Rapids,
I am going to assume that you have a 12 volt test light.
Without unplugging the distributor cap turn the 4 hold downs and lift it off.
KOEO (key on, engine off)
With the test light connected to ground, back probe the connector w/12 gauge wire-it should light
If it does back probe...
It wouldn't hurt to flush out the old brake fluid with new and that would eliminate any air that might be in the system as well

Miss the rod yes, loose the rod no
If the pump mated to the block smoothly its in!
The screwdriver method works fine in most circumstances

How about an overhead pic of the engine compartment without the air cleaner on?
And one of the carb that was removed

If the engine ran fine before and nothing was touched I guess that I would start by putting the number 1 piston at TDC (top dead center)
Then check to see if your rotor is pointing towards the number 1 spark plug wire
If not maybe a loose timing chain
If close just simply time for a tune up...
Like Mikey said, request all of your old parts and get pictures!
By law they have to give them to you
AND request a repair history from them, sometimes it will show the vehicles mileage when you dropped it off and when they were done with repairs.
I believe that you would have noticed that...
