So after a long slumber in my garage, my 73 is back online ( almost ) .....
It had a bad case of sitting to long itis......
Long story short ( er )
Retired on 7/30/13 ( OH FRICKING YEAH PLAY TIME )
Took a week out and literally dug the 73 out of the garage...
New battery, drained fluids...
Well I'm done with work....Week 1 of retirement
Been doing a lot of last minute " custom work " for my friends.. guitar amps, outboard gear refurb, mic preamps, etc etc...
All boxes unpacked, severance check in the mail.... retirement funds moving to Merrill......
NOW back to the fun stuff...
What triple sez!
The ballast resistor was a current limiter to drop the voltage in RUN to ~ 9 volts this keeps the coil from FRYING, if the car is off points are CLOSED and the ignition was left ON.. Modern ignition products need the full 12 volts and do NOT have that " issue "....
Ummmmm
I have the MSD module as well....
Like this
MSD 6425 8202 Digital 6AL Ignition Box Blaster II Coil Combo | eBay
here's a used one
MSD Ignition Box and Blaster 2 Coil Small Block Big Block 396 327 350 Chevy | eBay
Then
Install an MSD blaster and coil and the car will run on split pea soup.....
Muy Muy MORE spark...
I have the Petronix and MSD.. and the car starts on the first blip..
Mike
And an update
Been really busy at work , wraping things up.. getting ready to RETIRE YYEEESSSSSSSSSSSS...
Plus it's been freakin hot in So Cal these days, so not much has gone on....
Ok wait a sec....
If you had the carb rebuilt what was the reason?
....car would run but not idle or has the car been sitting for a LONG time ?
If the car runs with you manually adding fuel... Well then it's behind the filter....
I ASSUME the car is stock and not a restro mod....
I would...
Once the system shuts down.....
And it's been cooling for a bit.... As you noted the pressure changes 120psi ( ish ) static (not running)....
vs
40 on the low side 220+ on the high side ( running )
So when you shut it down.. you hear " hissing ".. it's the freon in the pipes " equalizing "...
An OH BY THE WAY,,, my OLD rocker cover had no baffle for the PVC...
So any splash off the rocker itself got sucked into the PVC valve....
Oil burning, leaving a mess on the rear panel under the bumper solved~
( just didn't think it through ) DOH~
A couple of thoughts
The column gets it's ground from mechanical bolting to the dash... have you verified with an ohm meter that the column it self is grounded ?
The copper pin in the hub gets grounded when you press the horn button ( which is bolted to the hub ) ....
Can you take a picture ...
Timing reset waiting for it to cool down ( outside )
New radiator arrived today, plus new chrome air filter top ( mine was pitted )...
So we will take a drive this evening and see if we now have MAS HUEVOS + cooling.
It's about 22 degrees total With VAC advance BTDC @ 800 rpm and the vac is...
OK That's what I'm talking about!
16 teeth brilliant!!!!
Now to get this clear in my head..
I need MORE advance ( now at 0 or a hair after with no vac hooked up )
Since the distrib rotates CW.... I need to go 1 tooth CCW (more advance) and that will allow a CW backoff ( retard to taste ) on...
