Mines not an A/C car
So not sure if this helps....
The left knob is the fan speed.. and I believe pull out for heat.
The right one is floor or defrost ( doesn't turn ).
I guess the question is... can you get the compressor to turn on ?

Having fun with all the venting from valve cover to air cleaner..
The stock air cleaner hits the linkage ( carb spacer to the rescue )

Let me clarify
You could use just a wire....and that would work
BUT
If it was my car ( because I'm really careful with 40 yr old wiring )
I would have a wire with an inline 5A ish fuse and use that to jump the 2 points
Oh and
is there a speed change during the 2 or 3 flashes, however many till it quits ?
You know the flasher ( if it's old skool ) senses current by a coil of wire which heats up a bi metal strip ( read switch )....
SO if it pulls to much current the Bi metal will stay open....
That being said...
Do the lights quit in the ON mode
EG say your making a left... blink, blink nada... is the indicator on the dash still lit PLUS both exterior lights still on...?
Still sounds like hub to me
But you will not know till you pull it all apart...
BTW you have to grab the tire @ 12 & 6 and rock up and down... that will tell you the hub freeplay...
With that many miles.. I would bet hub VS 1/2 shaft U joint... it's not that bad of a job...
