One more thing to consider, if your caliper seals are old/worn then you will suck air past the lip of the seal during brake release and never get it bled out. How old are your calipers?

I just looked at my 78' with A/C, which should be close to your 81', and if you remove the Rad overflow jug, there should be room to remove the blower.

Buy the AIM as a looseleaf binder unless you have a computer in your garage to look at the CD while you work on your Vette. The GM service manuals are also very usefull.
Also, there are shims under the hood hinges to raise or lower it. Check to make sure something has not broken loose on the front nose assembly that caused it to drop down.
