Actually, you will need to loosen the nut to lower the rear. They also sell longer bolts if you want to get it really low.

I have a 71' and a 78' in the same garage both with Quadrajets and I don't get a gasoline smell. If the charcoal canister and its associated hoses are correct and functional, you should not get a gas smell.
It's a crate engine built by GM. You can't go wrong with it. Shop around to get the best price as all GM dealers sell them.

There are 3 studs cast into the cap (#1 in the pic below) that get peened over to hold the emblem in. Not sure if you can actually change it. I just bought another cap.
I used a Flex-A-Lite duel electric on my 78'. Works great and fit well. Comes with a universal fit bracket, but I fabbed up my own. You should also consider the stock GM fan and clutch. They are very quiet as well.
