Yeah, I had located TDC to make sure that wasn't why it was off. I used a TDC tool screwed into #1 and the timing mark was dead on zero.
It is vacuum advance (timed with the vacuum cable plugged).
I just lost all credibility :) it is BTDC. I read the A on the timing mark as After - now I...
Update: I set it to TDC on the compression stroke and pulled the dist cap. It looked like it was on #8 but then turned the dist to retard it (What I'll call the "normal" position) and it was on #1.
There was discussion on Before or After. To clarify its 40 degrees Before (Edited: I had typed...
Hi Steve - motor has definitely been played with at some point in time, however, the car is in great shape and has been well cared for. Haven't seen any shortcuts or signs that "Bubba" had worked on it.
However, what you say could very well be true - if it was would the car lack power? It...
Yup, lopey idle. I also have an '80 vette with a 350. The '65 will blow the doors off the 80. I do need to keep the RPMs higher as the car will get "lopey" while driving at the lower end of a gear. Hopefully that makes sense...
Not top dead center again! Turning the engine was a PIA but at least I get to try some of the other techniques listed from my last posted question :)
I'll post the results, however, kids and wife are taking me away from the garage so its going to be a few days before I can get back at it...
I'm taking it off the manifold. The needle vibrates +/-, with 10 being the "average". I may try tuning the carb as it has a "rich" smell but I thought it best to start with timing.
10 Inch HG on the vacuum.
Used another sears timing light (has an advance) - same results. I'll check on the dist vs #1 next, as well as verify the firing order.
Thanks Guys - The vacuum advance is plugged, motor idling, @ 650 RPM. Light is connected to the #1 plug (drivers side front).
I'm using a timing light where you can set the advance. With it at zero the mark is off the scale. Adjusting the lights advance to down 40* brings the mark to the 0...
Howdy - I found top dead center and confirmed that the indicator was dead on. The car runs best at 40 degree after TDC. Seems excessive - I don't know why it would want it to run at that degree.
The engine is a 327 (non-original) that apparently has had a CAM upgrade - what is in there I...
Cool
There is a car in the first picture??:confused
Seriously, its amazing what people can do. I don't have the patience for that type of work nor the creativity needed.
I had also heard that is how you could tell a 327 from a 350. However, someone contradicted that claim and indicated that some 327's did have a bolt. So, I'm inferring that if you don't have a bolt, its a 327. If you do have a bold, you'll have to figure it out another way. Not sure if its...
Gonna answer my own question.
FIRST and FOREMOST make sure the car is in neutral - goes a lot easier that way :)
I ended up grabbing some long hardend bolts, screwed them into the pully bracket holes, and used a bar to turn the engine. Still not a piece of cake, but workable.
Hi Folks - I'm attempting to find TDC on #1 and need to crank the engine by hand. Took out all spark plugs, removed fan and....my 80 has a bold in the dampener that I can turn with a socket. No such bold on my 65. It does have smaller bolds holding on the belt pully but I don't feel good...
Thanks
Hi 73shark - thanks for the info. Found the fuel line, and realized I'm going to have to take off the radiator hose and alternator brackets to get that line in. So much for a quick swap :)
Hello - I need to custom bend some fuel line for my '80 with a 350sb. Does anyone know the stock size from the fuel pump to the carb line? Is it 3/8" OD or 5/16th OD?
Thanks!
Hi Tom - running 205/75/15 all around. Seems obvious as to what they are now :) They do cover the holes in the brake spindle which I guess might provide some protection? Perhaps the rims would do the same thing when mounted....
I'm at a loss as the original issue of lateral movement. I...
Not seeing a problem
OK, so I took off the tires and got a good look at the shim packs. Pictures attached. Hopefully, these look right. I can't feel or see any play.
I pulled off the tire and and brakes and got a better look at things. Everything looks great and I couldn't feel any play when...
