Reply to MIKEY: -hummmm, no cigar, -as the principle of the radially-vented drum-brake is advantageously entirely mechanical, --wherein the embossing-effect of the 72-holes greatly increases the stopping power; -and anyone who would park their car on a slope using Norvel's clever albeit...
I decided to do away with the poly mounts because the motor was really torking over and with the blower so high it really emphasized how much. I decided to go with solid mounts. I also wanted the rigidity the solid mounts would give the steering box frame rail.
When we install mounts we usually...
My son runs a powder coating line in industry. The parts go through a acid bath and then through the powder spraying process and then into the oven. NOthing special was done other then manually degreasing. Rearends come out ok but the gloss is not there that a normal clean piece would have. I...
Earlier this year my son Steve and I did a rearend for a fellow forum member. He went basically factory stock parts. The posi clutches were $175 and the axles shims were $110 from the factory. We need the shims to tight up the spider gears and help fix the end play problem with brand new yokes...
I know I posted on this before but I keep getting asked how to do it by new guys.
Once again.
The trailing arms need to be out of the car of coarse. Remove the flange nut and the flange, then the 4 bolts holding the axle assembly on and remove it.
You know roughly the size of the tire you want...
Yes I did vacuum it out and I did bring each piston to the top before cleaning but without heads the motor turns over very easy. I use lots of oil on the cylinders and every time I am in the shop I seem to be misting with WD 40.
I posted on installing hydraulic parking brakes before. This is a shot of my caliper mounted on the trailing arm. It is a light weight aluminum caliper with dual pistons. It also shows a grease fitting that I use to lightly lube the bearings and part of the offset trailing arm.
This is a...
After 5 years of running this combination I decided to tear it down and change it. I used a cup shaped wire wheel on my die grinder and spent no more then 5 minutes on this bank cleaning all 4 pistons and most of the head surface.
A wire wheel on the end of my die grinder can not mark anything...
My brakes have been divided into two complete seperate systems. I removed the proportioning valve/light and run a seperate line from the rear master to the rear brakes and a seperate line from the front master to the front brakes. They are completely two seperate systems. If one fails the...
Hydroboost is old. I have had one and most of the guys I know have had them for years. They can be picked up cheap at the wreckers and it takes very little to adapt them to our cars, they are basically a bolt in.
A good used unit goes for $50 around here , coleman sells adapters to use...
Yes it's only purpose is if the other brake fails for some reason I have something to fall back on , That a the cops stop for a roadside inspection and I can pull that emergency brake and the car will not move. Weather it rolls away in 15 minutes is not a concern.
The calipers are aluminum...
Yes I could. I even have a spare line lock sitting on the shelf but I actually want to try and be as close to legal as possible. I don't want to be hauled into a safety lane, have a mechanic pull the lever and find I was cheating on my system. It could also be dangerous in that the line lock is...
The caliper is rigidly mounted and it has 2 live pistons, one on each side.
Yes the pressure will drop over a short time. I have not tested it but I bet after as little as 1/2 hour the brakes are starting to let go.
My idea with the emergency brake is if you main brakes fail and my main braking...
No way. If you Tee into the main line when you apply the emergency brake the fluid would just go back to the main master cylinder and not activate the brakes. If you put a check valve in the main line your main brakes wouldn't release because the fluid couldn't flow back.
No you need a second...
Yes I do end up with 2 calipers on each wheel. I turned the rear rotor on a lathe and removed the entire center where the old emergency brake road. I cut 3 pounds out of each rotor so with the hydraulic calipers I should be about even in the weight department.
At the time I did all 4 rotors ...
I did not have a parking brake for years. The old mechanical one was too much trouble so I ditched it and decided to build a hydraulic one.
I raided my sons supply of various brake parts and came up with calipers with 2 live pistons that would fit my 12 inch rear rotor, a master cylinder that...
