you need to check the low pressure cycling swicth first. just because the compessor does not engage it does not mean it is bad you will need to do some electrical diagnostics before canning the compressor you need to see if the clutch and electrical components are ok just my 2 cents steve
I have also seen this in other GM model cars the evaporator is not cooling correctly because of the low charge it is worth a check if the head is ok only my 2 cents Steve
I do not know if removing the egr is a good idea you could end up with preigntion issues .it really is not the power robber everyone thinks they are . if you remove the efe you could have cold running issues but that may not matter to you. juast be sure the valve on the exaust manifold is open...
I have the same motor in my 69 it seems to get by if you use the top shelf gas . you could also change the cam and it would lower the cylinder pressure with the right combo . would most likley have to runit by one of the cam mfg to get the right one just my 2 cents steve
i do not think a n o2 would give you a misfire but i supose anything is possible can you grab a code when the light is on ? I would suspect a bad ground or some other part failing maybe even ecm if it is not storing codes Steve
as far as i knowthre is a tab aprox 1/2 inch long that needs to be pushed in it will be a dark color and just to left of middle of cylinder if my memory serves me right. some times there is casting flash over the slot Steve
What kind of column although I do not think it makes a differance Once the wheel is off , lock plate and directioal switch there is a tab that needs to be pushed in sometimes the tab is covered with a piece of flashing and hard to see. the key also has to be in the cylinder and in the run...

if thre car is under warranty the dealer will tow it in no charge . I do not think a regular back yard person could do the repairs but i could be wrong steve
