Just installed a new set of comp cams magnum roller tip rockers and push rods. What a pain in the arse to get just right. Lash is much more tricker with them, and I an into the problem where you cannot get a socket on the nuts without binding the rocker. Also ran into a problem where the oil...
YIKES!!!
Just found out that regular Royal Purple. . .the stuff they sell in Autozone. . .etc. . .has been changed from SL to SN with much lower levels of ZDDP. I guess I cannot use regular Royal Purple any more. Note, royal purple makes an HPS version now. . .which does have plenty of ZDDP...
Thank you. . .that confirms my understanding. . .SL or older. . .
Also, please note that I was not suggesting that anyone change their oil every 1000 miles. I did that because I was told. . .I thought though your paper. . .but maybe it was somewhere else that the ZDDP in the oil actually wears...
Ok my information may be out of date now. . .but this was the information I got from Shell directly in 2006. I used to use Rotella until Jan 1st 2006 when they changed the formual and packaging and rating from CI-4/SJ to CJ-4/SM.
Luckily I noticed the rating change and I quickly called Shell...
I should add one more note.
I change my oil every 1000 miles. . .just to keep the good ZDDP levels up. I do not know if this oil will make it 3,000 miles without engine damage.
Here is the Mobile 1 pdf with the zinc:
http://www.mobil.com/USA-English/MotorOil/Files/Mobil_1_Product_Guide.pdf
Correction, it was the regular Mobile 1 15w50 (not 15w40) that has 1,300ppm
I'd like to know which product this is as well!!! Along with the amount of zinc. I've got an LT-1 mechanical flat tappet motor, and my buddies 396 is also mechanical flat tappet.
The only two oils that can easily be found (e.g. at local autozone, O'Riley, Walmart. . .etc. . .etc), which is...
Ok. . .update time. . .
So I odered some oil defectors from sumit. . .installed them.. .then ran the engine. I was able to confirm that the loud valve was infact number 7 intake. So I tighened it down until the noise went away. Didn't take much. . .maybe a third of a turn. While running I tried...
ok just for giggles, I went out and tighened them up a tiny bit more. . .removed a couple of thousandths. Made zero difference.
I went out to Autozone and bought a automotive stethescope (sp?)
After listening to every valve location (through the valve covers). . .intake on cylinder 7 sounds...
Yes, oil level is correct.
I have no idea what could be causing this. tripple checked the valve lash.
Could it be a bad spring? Everyone says is sounds like valve lash. . .and I agree. . .but it clearly isn't. I'm nearling my wits end. It is embarrasing to drive.
Oh, in case I didn't...
I have a 1970 l46 sm with solid mechanical lifters. The engine is mildly hot riddled to correct lt-1 rotating and valve assembly. I've set the lash many times in the past to a cold value of .21 intake and .26 exhaust using the John hinkley procedure.
About three days ago I noticed a clicking...
I have a split view on this. I don't think they should split corvette from Chevy, as that is silly for the purests, and the Chevy brand. But I do agree with the old European complaint, that the corvette should not have any GM or Chevy branding or text anywhere on the car. You can make...
Ok, I think I'm getting somewhere. . .(thanks to information from Lars, and others). . .but I’m not there yet.
I want to document what I have seen in the event that it might help others. I will try to provide all the details. What I will not go into (because this will be a long e-mail to...
It was a complete rebuild kit with all new parts. I was able to get the idle below 1000 and the dribbling from the mains stopped. She just runs like crap below 1000. Had to back the idle screws out 3 turns to get it to run at about 800 rpm. Not sure what to think now.
Ok. . .so I admit I'm a newbie to carbs. . .but I'm not completely numpty headed.
After installing my rebuilt carb using a Cliffs performance kit. . .I noticed that some fuel was pooling on the top of the carb near the accelerator pump shaft. And under idle fuel was dribbeling down the...
