Scott, my 82 did the same thing. I just replaced the speedo cable. In doing so I eliminated the cruise control, as I didn't need it anyway. Oh by the way, my problem was with the cruise control transducer. I didn't feel that the need for a new one out weighed the $$$ so just bypassed it...
zixxer, good luck with the 82. The 82's have a lot of goodies that the 80/81 didn't have. I rebuilt mine and had a ball doing it. Don't forget to post some pics.

I pulled the egr valve, and all the AIR junk that goes with it, off my 82. What a difference. Had to re adjust the timing and it runs like a charm. Give it a try.
Just my opinion.

Tony, The price is not bad. You have to plan on spending $$$$$$ on a C-3 to get it back in shape. It's either, spend $12,000 to get one all fixed up or buy it for $5or $6,000 and do the work on it. I chose to do the later and have never regretted it. Ya got to love working on these babies...
I have all 3 of my cars thru Encompass. Can't get "Classic Ins." till next year for the 82 Vette. It will be at quite a savings. (now paying over $1,000 for just the Vette.) Our ins. is regulated by the state up here in Taxachusettes. lol

Firefighter, check your brake pads. The warning bars may be rubbing on the rotor. If that's not it check the emergency brake. (may be to tight)
Just a thought. Good Luck

My 82 gets at least 20 mpg. The thing I liked about the 82, when looking for a Vete, was all the bells and whistles that you don't normally get on an 80 or 81. Power seat, mirror, rear window defrost, to name some. Just my thoughts.
Love mine.
