Sounds like worn out pins and bushings in hinge. Pretty easy fix but only remove one hinge at a time and rebuild and you won't have much trouble. I believe most auto parts should have pins and bushings, not expensive either.

The button on top pulls straight up, need to get something under edge to get it off. The shifter knob itself has a c clip towards the bottom has to come off next. After c clip is off i had to take a small piece of wood and tap with a hammer to get knob off. I suspect it was first time the knob...
