They are made from high grade T-304 stainless steel. I make them to cover as much of the sill area for issues just like yours to cover faded or worn carpet.

Sounds very similar to what happened with my 88 a few ago, turned out to be u-joints. If so, it could be very dangerous to your bank account if it comes apart and takes out anything in the process. Good luck.
There are a few ways you can install these, most guys just use the screws that hold the carpet in place, others use velcro. I used the screws myself. Hope this helps.

I too put these on my 1988 coupe and they still look great after 3 years. I did tack weld mine on due to a very loose fit even with the shims. Hope this helps.
