OK, final question regarding the gear oil for the tranny in my 81. I just got the oil delivered by Summit. It's Brad Penn "Classic" Multi Purpose GL-4 80W90 Gear oil. All looks good with the exception of the following which is on the label: Not for use in applications requiring API GL-5 quality...
Thanks, all. Chiltons specifically mentions GL5, and you definitely say GL4, Hib? I am now reading the bottle of 80W90. It reads as follows:
Differential: API SERVICE GL-4, GL-5
Non-Synchronized Manual Transmission: API Service GL-5

Thanks for all the suggestions but it winds up that it was the alternator that went bad....guess it was a coincidence. The system was way overcharging and now all is back to normal.
Thanks, but now i'm confused - if the connector on the passenger side between 6 & 8 cylinders is a temp switch, what is the water temp sensor in the head between 1 & 3 cylinders thar Bill had referredn to?
I replaced the spark plugs about two weeks ago...about a week ago i noticed problems w both the water temp gauge and the ammeter. after a few mins both immediately get pinned to the right but the car runs fine...is there a short? maybe i moved a wire while i was under there?
