Question: 1987 Mass Air Flow Sensor - Code 33 Diagnosis and Replacement Options

Thanks for all the replies. I haven't had the time to get back on this, but here are some comments based on questions asked recently: I did look inside the MAF sensor, but it's pretty hard to see the fine wires through the screen. My mechanic says if a wire was broken I wouldn't have an...

Question: 1987 Mass Air Flow Sensor - Code 33 Diagnosis and Replacement Options

I've already replaced the relays. I'm hoping to do some more checks this week using the test harness I just got that plugs into the MAF connector. I spoke to my Corvette mechanic and he had some suggestions for testing. Lee

Question: 1987 Mass Air Flow Sensor - Code 33 Diagnosis and Replacement Options

I checked with Greg Carroll at BlowerWorks, asking for some info and if they had any Callaway Twin Turbo customers. Here is the response I got: "Hi Lee - no Callaway customers yet. You'd be the first but I'm sure not the last. The old Bosch sensor wears out and the calibration goes south...

Question: 1987 Mass Air Flow Sensor - Code 33 Diagnosis and Replacement Options

Maybe you can figure out a way to get back here. I think the economy is stronger in Houston that it is here right now, though. Take care, Lee

Question: 1987 Mass Air Flow Sensor - Code 33 Diagnosis and Replacement Options

Thanks for the info boomdriver - sounds like you've been having a lot of fun chasing down your problems. It's definitely going into limp mode when the code comes on - very poor performance, low rough idle, etc. When did you live in OC? I'm about a mile or two from the beach here and the car...

Question: 1987 Mass Air Flow Sensor - Code 33 Diagnosis and Replacement Options

Thanks Glenn, As I recall, I've replaced four relays; I think there were two behind the battery and two up on the firewall: (1) MAF burn off (2) fuel pump (3) MAF power (4) I don't remember the function of this one :confused. Lee

Question: 1987 Mass Air Flow Sensor - Code 33 Diagnosis and Replacement Options

I had my 1987 Callaway serviced recently: transmission rebuild, new clutch and replacement of the thermistor used to measure water temp for cold starting. On the drive home from the shop, I got a check engine light and found it was a code 33. After clearing the code, it will usually reappear...

    4+3 trans questions

I just had the manual trans "rebuilt" on my car and replaced the overdrive with an exchange unit from SK Speed. I wanted to keep the car stock but considered and researched other options such as the Tremec or Richmond. SK has a waiting list of several weeks, so you may want to get your name on...

Question: Rear Main Seal info for 87 B2K

Thanks Tom, My addendum on Page 17 under Transmission Overdrive says: "the control switch for the transmission overdrive has been modified so the overdrive will remain in whatever mode has been manually selected, whether the iginiton switch has been switched off or not. (see pps. 5-6)"...

Question: Rear Main Seal info for 87 B2K

Thanks MagicDragon. The weekend drive has been postponed to this Saturday. Callaway Cars West checked the car out a few months ago and replaced the intake seals which were leaking oil, so hopefully they covered any issues with PVC lines. What kind of clutch did you have in it before? Lee

Question: Rear Main Seal info for 87 B2K

Got it back on Monday I got it back on Monday and based on my drive back home and a short drive a couple of days later I am happy with the results. The manual shifting action is much improved and overdrive operation is more positive. The manual bypass for overdrive didn't get done. I'm going...

Question: Rear Main Seal info for 87 B2K

Thanks MagicDragon. My current daily driver and the last two were modern 6 speeds and before that it was 5 speeds. I got a call from the Corvette shop today - they've been very thorough in looking for any residual oil leak and verifying the car is starting when "cold" every morning for a few...

Question: Rear Main Seal info for 87 B2K

The O/D was slipping and the trans guy said the fluid was pitch black, signs it had been overheated. The 4 speed sometimes popped out of 2nd gear. Brian at S-K Speed said that popping out of 2nd gear is usually an indication of problems in the O/D. My trans guy said these 4 speeds were known for...

Question: Rear Main Seal info for 87 B2K

Thanks MagicDragon - nice pic! I think the car will be ready this week. The trans guy didn't think there was much leakage around the seal, but something on the driver's side not visible from below might be leaking. Hopefully he can figure out where it's coming from. I started researching...

Question: Rear Main Seal info for 87 B2K

I've got my '87 in for transmission work - getting the overdrive replaced with a unit from S-K Speed in New York, and having the manual trans rebuilt, and getting a new clutch and flywheel. The trans guy said the crank and flywheel is not standard for a 1987 (crank is forged pre 1987 he...

Question: Will KYB Shocks fit 1987 RPO B2K?

Bilstein Shocks Installed TPIS didn't have any shocks in stock and could not verify they would fit the Z51 suspension. They did say the shocks were originally developed and tested on the Z51 suspension. I was able to get the right Bilstein shocks from The Tire Rack. I went to Palm Springs...

Question: Will KYB Shocks fit 1987 RPO B2K?

I found that the lower rear pin that the shock bushing fits over is larger with Z51 the suspension, so that's why a non-Z51 shock won't fit on the rear. It looks like the front shocks do not have to be Z51 specific to fit. I got in touch with TPIS and they are checking to see if their rear...

Question: Will KYB Shocks fit 1987 RPO B2K?

The TireRack has advised that KYB does not make a shock for my car (Z51 specific). They said it was their error that this was not noted for this shock/application, and they are going to pay for return shipping, give me a refund and reimburse me for the labor I paid to R&R 1 shock. Thanks, Lee

Question: Will KYB Shocks fit 1987 RPO B2K?

Hi Hib, It appears that you are one of the experts in this area, so I value any opinion you may have. From the research I've done, it sounded like the ride would be better with KYB shocks, and I figured the car could easily be returned to stock by going back to originals if desired. I've got...
