I took some styrofoam that came with a new computer and made "feet" for the front edge and stacked my hardtop in my basement. Covered it with a blanket that was not seeing any usage. I'd be concerned with cardboard or anything else that might absorb water/moisture to wick to the hardtop.
You first stated that your friend had an all-original '68 convertible, which implied a kind of survivor status. Now you say that a two-to-one ratio of convertibles to coupes mean convertibles with a 1968 vintage are worth less. Is rarity a condition of desirability? Not in $8K cars. And if...
1971 was the last year for fiber optic warning lights. The only external difference between the 1971 and 1972 Corvettes is the amber front turn signals and chrome plating on the egg-crate grills on the 1972. 1972 was the only year for Corvette Big Block engines to have no horse power sticker...

My fronts were toast but the backs still had tread when I opted for four new Michelin PS A/S ZP's and a 4-whl alignment. Couldn't be happier.
Maybe you could buy all four and sell off the backs to defray the big downstroke. By all means, with the cost involved, get the alignment.
And I've...
