I have had her for 19 years and it's finally time to part with her and move on.
The car has 135K miles, mostly highway miles. Cold a/c. Properly working 4+3. Good tires. Runs great with no oil usage. Radio has a mind of it's own, but it is a Bose system, sounds good when it works. Original...
One of the best technical improvements of the C5 was the strong perimeter structure of the car. It is no surprise to me tha you find your C5's handling much more predictable than most ANY C4 top on OR off.
When I replaced the throttle body, I used a freshly refurbished unit from XtremeEFI. Although I would never do business with them again, I believe it is okay. They bore it to 52MM and supposedly put a ball bearing on the arm end of the shaft.
There are two cables going to the TB, one from...
Thanks for the responses.
I checked it further last night after being out of town since posting this question. The pedal was free and the cables SEEMED free. The throttle arm seemed sticky. I sprayed it with brake cleaner and let that dry then sprayed it with aerosol white lithium grease...
My 88 stick shift car has a sticky throttle. There is no idle speed problem of any sort, but when pressing the throttle it does not actuate smoothly. You keep adding pressure until it comes to a point where the throttle snaps open. Since this is a stick shift car, it makes it less than fun to...
Have you checked to see if there are any codes set? Even if there is no check engine light, there might be codes in memory. You don't need a scanner for this, just a paper clip.
Oh no! An oil thread, yikes!
This is sort of like opening a thread with a question about reliion or politics.
There are three basic principles here:
If it's a roller cam engine, you can use about any premium oil in a reasonable viscosity range.
If it's a flat tappet cam, you need a zinc...
John,
Is this a high mileage car? The reason I ask is that I have driven mine to high mileage and along the way got into a similar situation as yours. It turned out to be the Throttle Body completely worn out. Once the throttle shaft and it's bearing surfaces wear, it lets the blades drag...
Quite often I see folks focusing on tire BRAND instead of tire specs for the application.
The first information you should offer when asking for tire recommendations, is what you will be doing with the tires and what your goals are.
The best tire for street and highway cruising, looking for...
I can't answer whether the cross braces are worth the money, but I went through a lot of research several years back when I was preparing to do some Solo II competition with my 88.
I don't remember the reasons now, but the conclusion that I came to at the time was to build a camber brace and...
dugr offers a better suggestion than chemical flushing. Back flushing the HEATER CORE ONLY is a very good thing to do in the case of restricted flow. A leaking core is a different situation.
To back flush the heater core, simply remove both lines and rig a garden hose to flow BACKWARDS...
To be more precise, I watched temps closely when driving to work this morning. It is a 20 mile drive almost entirely on a winding country road with 55MPH speed limit until about halfway, then it goes to 60. Ambient was 78.
Coolant Temp climbed at a steady rate until it hit 195. Evidently...
In about any weather, on the highway it stays right around 192 to 195 and in stop and go wants to be about 210. With the exception of a time when it wouldn't warm up and needed a thermostat, it has always stayed in this temperature zone.
Mine is an 88 and is quite the opposite. The a/c was the first that I converted to 134 many years ago and even though I'm in Texas it will freeze you to death if you let it. It makes 38 degrees at the vent and can do it in just a few miles after it's red paint has been heat soaking in the Sun...
This post surprises me. My 88, has stock radiator and condensor. The engine runs cool under all conditions and the a/c, even though converted to 134 can make a Polar Bear scream for mercy and I live in Texas.
I'm fully aware of the value of a data logger. I have a couple of them for OBDII including EASE on a Laptop and a handheld. I just never got into anything on OBDI that required this level of analysis for diagnosis. The early GM stuff was the most straight forward IMHO.
I've always managed quite well with a paper clip shorting terminals A & B then counting the flashes. I've never had the need for watching real time data in one of these cars.

There's LOTS of wisdom and good recommendations in this very short post!!!!!!!
I've been working on auto a/c systems since being in my Dad's independent shop at the age of 8 in 1957. He started installing aftermarket a/c systems and doing lots...
Looks Great! What year is it? Stick or automatic? Be careful driving it in the rain. It can swap ends on you quicker than you can turn the wheel.
Congrats!
