I am going through this with my 81. I took the connector off the headlight switch and tapped into the brown wire there. The only problem is anytime you tap into the brown lighting wires it also sets off the warning buzzer. I haven't been able to get around this so far.

Yes, there is a heat shield on each side as well as plug wire shields.
