I don't live in USA but some forum members posted that many parts retailers offer to read the code for free for there customers. I think you should try this way to see if there are ''pending codes''. Pending codes may be present but because of ecm parameters they did not light up the check...

If you have access to a code reader, check if there is code about the evap system. These codes can take many drive cycles to put the check engine on depending the type of driving your are doing. A problem whit the evap system may not leak on the ground but may give you strong smell of fresh fuel...

I don't know if the connector for the fuel gage is easy to reach, bust the best way is to back probe the connector to simulate the signal for a low fuel condition. If the light comes on during simulation, then you are sure the entire circuit is ok and the problem is probably in the fuel tank...
