One of these days I'm gonna get my calipers out and do my own reverse engineering of that gear. In quantity, I bet they can be made for a few dollars each.
The plastic gears in the aluminum clamshell are the weak link. There must be a source for the parts since people are selling rebuilt units.
The gears and the spacers in the gearbox are made of a plastic that doesn't hold up. I've had a couple of the boxes apart and tried to put together one...
For my '94, I find that it's most usefull for reprogramming the fans to come on earlier to keep the radiator temperature lower. I haven't been able to discern any seat-of-the-pants difference with the engine tuning.
If your driving record is good and you're over 25 (or is it 28) and/or married, then you're getting reamed by Liberty Mutual.
I'm in the most congested part of NJ (right across the river from NYC) and pay NJ Manufacturer's Ins. $980/year for my '94-6spd. That's with $500K liability and...
If you look at the data in this chart, http://corvetteactioncenter.com/tech/c4/susp_chart.html, you'll see that Chevy softened the springs rates considerably from 89/90 to the end of the C4 production.
The spindle nut is on the outboard end. If you take the wheel off, you'll be looking right at it. Actually, if you look closely at my signature pic, you can see the spindle nut at the center (between the lug bolts)
I believe that the cost for Bilstein to rebuild has risen to as high as $150, - considering that new shocks are ~$200, it's almost not worth rebuilding, unless you're getting the custom valving.
Concerning the actuators, I don"t believe that anyone is rebuilding them. I've bought a few broken...
If you lost you R12, you have a leak which should be repaired before you add any type of refregerant. Unless you plan to do nothing about the leak, convert to R-134 and continuously add refrigerant, your main expense will be the repair.
IMHO, Get the leak(s) fixed and stick with R-12.
The spindle nut pulls the yoke tight into the bearing assy., so if the nut is loose you would be experiencing the problem you describe. The other possibility is that the washer/spacer (goes between the bearing/hub and yoke) has disintegrated (unlikely) or missing (how long have you owned the...
Been there, done that. The unit lives behind the radio/heat controls, under the dash pad. The dash has to be removed - be careful to get ALL the fasteners out before you tug on it or else you'll break the mounting points and end up with a loose, squeaky dash. Took me an entire weekend...
I went through the exact same frustration that you describe and also fixed it by replacing the PKE receiver. Wasn't removing the dash fun??? I suppose that I got real lucky - when I was having the problem, someone was selling an new PKE receiver on ebay which I got for $50.
Paul,
my '94 had the exact same problem when I bought it in '02. Like you, I replaced the mast but that didn't fix the problem. People on the forum mentioned that the last couple of inches of the ribbon gear may have broken off and was still in the care so I removed the antenna, took it apart...
Ken,
the "Jack-A-Vette" looks like a four-inch long piece of 4"x4" I beam. The upper flange is cut down to ~2" wide. It slides between the exhaust pipes and is positioned under the diff case. You lift the rear from that point.

I bought a heavy duty jack made by Arcan for $59 from the local Costco, specifically beacuse it's low-profile and fits very nicely under the Vette. The low-profile section is at least a foot long, so it gets good reach under the car as well. I'm sure thare are higher quality jacks, but for the...
I sent my injectors (and wholeheartedly recommend) Rich Jensen at Cruzin Perrformance (www.cruzinperformance.com). He charges $11/each to clean/recondition the injectors. New o-rings are included in the price. Mine were clogged up pretty badly and Rich ran them through his cleaning system 3...
