    Help! Manual Trans Issue

Tom, Thanks. Got the engine running and put the rear on jack stands. Followed your proposed procedure and whatever it was seems to have worked its way out. Ran the car in each gear for a few minutes to circulate oil and do no load wear in. Thanks again for your help.

    Help! Manual Trans Issue

Hib, I should have done this before installing, but its in the car now, and I have to remove the engine to get to the trans. Want to avoid if at all possible. Hope to free it up through careful use. Thanks. v/R Dan

    Help! Manual Trans Issue

Tom, Thanks, what you say makes sense. If a synchro ring is stuck, it would be best to try to free it disengaging the clutch and carefully engaging when in neutral. I am going to do as you recommend and will post result. For the life of me can't figure out how 1st gear could be partially...

    Help! Manual Trans Issue

Tom, Thanks for responding. It does sound like it is not completely disengaging. Perplexing. Is it possible to have 1st partially engaged and still be able to shift into 2nd? I cannot figure it out. As you recommended, I set up neutral just that way with the shift arms in the correct...

    Help! Manual Trans Issue

Was putting in the drive shaft and when trying to line up, tried and could not turn rear wheel in neutral. Removed shaft. DNE/Richmond 5 speed goes into all gears (checked ratios), but will not go into neutral. Ratio in neutral same as first gear. All linkages go to correct positions in all...

Help! Centerforce Clutch and Clutch Fork Position

I just finished installing my DNE 5 speed transmission on my ZZ 502 with a Centerforce Clutch. I was able to make this work thanks to the wisdom and knowledge shared on this website. I used the standard aluminum bellhousing, Centerforce throw out bearing, short looking ball stud, and clutch...

    Trans Install Issue

JohnZ, I'm sure you are right, but this engine block does not even have provision for a clutch ball for a manual setup. Why would GM invest to machine a block for an alignment to within 0.002 and add a provision for a clutch ball for a manual setup if they could machine to something less for...

    Trans Install Issue

The DNE is a late 5 speed with roller bearings. The real alignment problem is not the radial because there are dowel pins that can be used to restore to center. The parallelism is a about 0.016 in. out while the requirement is 0.002. This block really seems to be designed for an automatic...

    Trans Install Issue

Hib, Actually the transmission is a DNE 5 Speed. The drawings for this 5 speed and the Richmond version show that the diameter of this bearing retainer is 4.683 in. The Lakewood has a diameter the exact same. I did not really choose the Lakewood bellhousing as it came with the engine when I...

    Trans Install Issue

Hib, You are absolutely correct. When you said clutch housing I did not get that you meant bellhousing register. In parallel I got on line with the Lakewood catalog and like you say, the bellhousing register diameter is too small for the bearing retainer housing. The 15000 bellhousing is for...

    Trans Install Issue

Hib, Thanks for responding. You bring up a good point. I did check the fit of the pilot bearing before I installed it so it should be good. I also used the plastic alignment tool to line up the friction disk. The tool slips in and out very easily. The splined part of the input shaft easily...

    Trans Install Issue

I am installing a Richmond 5 speed onto a ZZ502 with a lakewood bellhousing and Centerforce II Clutch. I aligned the clutch using the plastic alignment tool, and it is well aligned. The bronze pilot bearing/bushing is fully seated with its face flush with crank surface. So I line it up and...

Scoggins Dickey Clutch Pivot Ball Bracket

Did the Scoggins Dickey bracket really work for anyone without considerable modification? When I install and line it up, I can't even get the nut on the back of the ball. Even without the nut, the ball stud hits the block. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. At this point I...

    Boring Shop Crane Question

John and Tom, Thanks! I actually borrowed a crane and verified that if you drop the chain outside the front of the boom vice straight down it might reach carb center. The hydraulic jack would be so close to the nose that you could not fit the jacking bar past the bumper to operate the lift...

    Boring Shop Crane Question

I looked through as many historical threads as I could. When you remove an engine with the transmission (manual) from a C2, will a regular 2 ton shop shop crane with a 63 in. boom length be able to pull the engine from the front? Does anyone know what that minimum reach would be that I would...

    Engine Noise

Tom, tmkassin, Thanks for the reply. A new shortblock should not have these issues. This one was owned by someone else for about 10 years so warranty resolution is probably not a possibility. I am in the process of checking the valve train and cylinder compression. Thanks again. Regards...

    Engine Noise

I have a ZZ502 that was broken in but has never been in a car. I am able to run it in on a test stand. There is a rapping noise that comes from cylinder number 8 best I can tell from the the head. Its hard to tell if its coming from the upper head or the noise is being transmitted from the...

    ZZ502 Engine Backfire

Lars, Thanks. I needed the other TDC. Now I need to figure out why it would'nt start when I did set it 180 deg. out. V/R VAroute66

    ZZ502 Engine Backfire

JohnZ, Lars, Thanks. I'll try again 180 deg. from where I was. All the manuals I have tell you to line up dot to dot with #1 TDC. So if I am set up 8 deg. before that, I thought that's when I would want it to fire. I set up my distributor that way. Thanks again! V/R VAroute66
