I took the Vette on a 250 mile ride to Long Island from upstate NY. Sixty miles after topping off the tank in NJ the engine started to lose power. I reached my destination and the next morning the car started showing no problems. Thirty five miles later it started to lose power, and I barely got it off the highway. After letting it cool down I crawled to an Advanced Auto, and replaced the electronic components on the top of the distributer. A half hour later I was stopped dead on the ramp of the GW Bridge. After resting a half hour I crawled to a Chevy dealer (Sunday night) in NJ.
The dealer insisted I replace the injectors, and he refused to drive the car to see the complete failure of the engine. I agreed to replacement of the distributer in hopes the problem was the cam position sensor. Upon picking up the car it was dead in the water again 4 miles down the road. I again abandoned it, and returned later to tow it home.
I have since replaced the gas filter and gas pump, though the gas pressure is consistent before and after engine failure, and the symptoms would suggest otherwise. Since I replaced the pump I have noticed that the oil pressure drops severely during the period between startup and complete engine failure; something that previously may have gone unnoticed.
PS: The car also leaks oil, and I had added oil twice on the way to LI. An issue which was going to be addressed had the engine problem not arisen.
