i have a 85 mix breed vette and does anybody know the best amp alternator? I have heard 120 amps are needed. i was wondering if a 140 would be better?

I guess it depends on what you need to power. I decided on a 140 amp from www.alternatorparts.com - model cs144-extreme duty. You also need to purhcase an adapter from them. I have purchased alternators from checker, auto zone etc for other cars and I have always had problems. I think it was worth the money. The quality is excellent. The install was ok and easy. I need to make a bracket that attaches to the rear of the alternator to the exhaust manifold. The location on the alternator is off by about 1 inch. But a trip to homedepot for some 1/5 aluminum thick wall tubing and a little monster garage action will do the trick. (I had to add that, you know bending metal, drilling holes for the vette. It is what my wife calls it anyway :D ) The main mounting bolts on the top and bottom are an exact fit for my 84. The other thing I had to do was drill out the battery connection to fit the new connector on the alternator. No biggy, dewalt cordless drill and a 3/8" bit did the trick.

IMHO it is better to have too much capability instead of not enough. If you are planning on running an exotic stereo with pre-amps, amps ...... you know one of those things that goes boom-boom-boom then you may need bigger.

elkabong 120/140 amps

thanks for the reply. this car i have, is getting to be frustrating trying to fix all the problems. It is a Vette/viper. anyway, i have mid-american alternato bracket with no smog on it at all. a/c yes.would a 140 amp fit.

If the alternator bracket supports a standard/stock alternator I do not see why not. I do not have experience with that bracket to be sure. I replace my stock unit with the CS-144. The only issue was the bracket on the back of unit that bolts to the exhaust manifold.

Give alternatorparts a call and ask them.

Just some FYI,

I use a 140 amp altenator dressed in chrome.....from Tuff Stuff....works well 14.7 when cold and 13.8 when engine is warmed up......
I also use the March Amp Pulley system......not just for a tiny bit of HP....But also for the great looks...
GOOD LUCK
