LT4 160 thermostat question

Hey guys I'm new to the site but have heard many good things. I have a 96 LT4 and I've tried reading up on cooling it down but still not quite sure about it. As far as I know it has stock thermostat temp wise at least but would installing a 160 help cool it down. Jus aggravating in traffic when car idles high and pulls car without hittin the gas. Thanks for any help everyone

High temps is not causing high idle,is it going into closed loop?~??
Is the MIL illuminated?~??
Sure the throttle shaft isn't worn and sucking air or IAC sticking.

Ugh I'm not sure. There's not any codes poppin up. But if u turn car off and turn it back on then it idles fine til u hit gas. But it only does it when it's hot

What rpm idle your idle at, and what temp is your coolant at, when you say that it idles too fast?

Why do you want to cool it down i.e., what coolant temps are too high? I would stay away from 160* t-stats, unless you have a highly modified engine and tune to match, as they can create problems with stock OEM engine and tune.

Normal idle is 600-700 it looks like. When temp gets over 200 or so is when it starts idling higher. Between a 1000 and 1800 rpm depending how high temp is. And car does have a bbk power plus throttle body, jet chip, headers, and aftermarket exhaust with x pipe

I'd check with a scanner in data mode to see what the sensors are doing first,then depending the outcome of that, I'd check for other things! Out of range temp sensor,Gummed up IAC,Loose worn throttle shaft in throttle body,Loose intake bolts,loose throttle body bolts,cracked vacuum lines,and all electrical grounds!~!! Non-Existent or High Resistance grounds make electronics do weird Sh*t!~!!

Replace It

There is nothing wrong with putting in a 160 temp thermostat and it's like $20-30 and should take less than 10 minutes to install. Though usually you'll want to reprogram the fan to come on at 180 along with it.

Only thing it's going to do is help your A/C blow out colder air.

But there could be something wrong as well. I briefly remember reading some troubleshooting tables in my service manual about your problem. There's a good chance you've got some sensors that are going bad and the heat aggravates the issue.

Well guys I fixed the problem two bucks later. Lol. My throttle return spring wasn't springy anymore. Put a new one on and no more high idle.

I was having problems with my 94 Vette running hot all of the time (by running hot I mean 225 which is supposed to be normal but it's too hot to please me. I hooked the coolant fan up to a manual switch so I can leave it on in town and it works a lot better.
