Folks,

Was told by several folks who were at the NCRS last week in Hershey, that there was a gentleman there who had a 1963 black/red convertible that he swears is a Z06!!!!!! Anyone on this forum see the car and can comment on how it was equipped? This gentleman supposedly is going to put the car up for auction at the January Barrett-Jackson show in Scottsdale.

It was shown at the Zion Regional; has all the right hardware that appears to be original to the car, but there's no documentation to support it having been built that way originally.

Greetings
I had a 63 Sebring Silver Z06 coupe speced out to order in January 1963, because the Z06 option was not available in the convertible due to the 36 gal. gas tank. Finally, I decided that I wanted my first Corvette, my first new car to be a convertible, so I declined to get the coupe. Value-wise that might have been a mistake, but fun-wise for these past 40 years, the convert was the right choice.

As best I can remember, later on the racing option was available for the converts under a single option code that did NOT include the 36 gallon gas tank. I'm not sure if it was still optioned as the Z06 option code though. It would be interesting to know what month his convert Z06 was built.

The one thing for sure in those early Corvette days, almost anything was possible if you knew the right people. Another thing for certian that in these days anything can be built. :)

'63 Z06 convertible being referred to is VIN 17166, Black with Tan interior and leather seats. Was purchased from original owner several months ago. I have no doubts it's genuine.

The '63 AIM indicates Z06 as buildable (Z06 section, Sheets 1.00 & 2.00) as either coupe or convertible beginning late calendar 1962. Also, the initial coupe-only price of $1,818.45 for the option was lowered to $1,293.35 during the model year once the N03 big fuel tank and P48 aluminum wheels were deleted from the Z06 option, and the later dealer pricing sheet makes NO mention of "Model 837 only".
