1965 Carpet

I am ready to install the complete carpet set in my '65 conv. I actually bought the carpet from Al Knoch at the 1995 Homecoming in Bowling Green, so it's been a long time getting in the car. I laid down a 1/8 to 3/32" thick layer of foil-backed heat resistant cloth and now I'm ready for the carpet set. What I am looking for is a good set of instructions on just how to put in this stuff. I'm a first timer so I need a lot of info. Any and all help is appreciated. Thanks.

I Have a 66 I put carpets in about 5 years ago.Ill take the time tonight and put down what I remember doing.

I took my top off to make it easeyer to work on the car.

Well its been a while but what I remember being important was.



I used 3M heavy duty trim adhesive, I used 2 ¼ of the big cans. I also purchased 3Ms trim adhesive remover.(You have to have this) I had several replacement razor blades on hand. I also worked with rubber surgical gloves and as my hands got stick I just shed my gloves and put on a new set. I am normally a clean worker but in setting the carpets I did get messy and with out the gloves and the trim adhesive remover I would have made a bigger mess.



I removed my convertible top for the project.



I test fit every thing and made sure I was happy with how things laid .I always cut the minimum needed to complete the project. Me personally will trim something 4 times rather then one big trim. Once you cut it off its gone and there is no way to put it back on.



I some how almost over trimmed by the console trim and just barely have enough carpet under the trim to hold it in place. (Remember I said I am always a careful trimmer I still don’t know what I did wrong) I did put a spot of crazy glue anyplace I had to set a screw thru the carpet so I would not tear the carpet apart.



When I set the front carpet, I drilled holes thru the heal pad for the gas pedal. I then took a set of bolts and cut the head off and sharpened them to a point. I threaded them into the gas pedal boss (on the floor of the car) and used that as my starting point for the front carpets and worked from there. I figured this was the most important spot. I then cut and trimmed as needed.



I just remember this being a pain of a job needing lots of patience, What I normally don’t have a lot of .Good luck and I wish I could give you more

Thanks for all the info. I really need all I can get. A couple of more questions if I may: 1. Does the jute (padding) get glued down to the floor and 2. Does the carpet get glued down to the jute at any place. When I removed the old carpet years ago it was a mess -- it had been glued down everywhere, jute to floor, carpet to jute, etc. It left fuzzy remnants and residue everywhere that was a bear to get off. As you can see from my questions that I am truly a NOVICE. Thanks again.

I just want to echo this as whom ever put mine in before me did the same thing. Make sure you put the seats back in just sitting in there to make sure the carpet does not pull away from the console... It would suck to have it looking all nice then put the seats back in and it pull out from under the console... I too have new AK carpet ready to go in but it's going to wait until winter when I do the interior... Dave...

I did my 64 this winter, used Al Knoch carpet. I had to trim very little, only because I used a heat barrier. I also used less the 2 cans of the adhesive. My thoughts were to use just what I needed. You never know when you might need to pull up an area for another project. I used a large soldering iron to melt through any holes I needed, such as seat belt, dimmer switch, etc. It made a clean hole, and will never let the carpet un-ravel. I have heard of some who heated a bolt with a torch to do the same. I did not remove my top, seemed like too much un-needed work. Not a real tough job, just use the advise of IH2LOSE, take your time, fit before glue, and it will turn out great. Good Luck!

Thanks for the info. I have not installed the top since doing sort of a frame-off so I have wide open spaces already. I laid down some foil-backed ceramic cloth I got from a friend who works for the insulation contractor at the power plant I work. It was only about 1/16 to 3/32". Thanks again.
