what is the correct size tire to fit in the spare tire compartment.

Most guys report that a 205/75 radial on a stock rim won't fit in the original tub, although that size WILL fit in the reproduction tub, which is slightly larger in diameter (I have a 205/75 radial on a 6" bolt-on rim in my repro tub). With an original tub, you may have to go to a 185/75 to get it to fit; if you get a rear flat and have Posi, put the spare on the front and put a front on the rear so you don't fry the Posi clutches.

Thanks John :
I do have posi and didn't give any thought about burning the clutches. I have knock offs so that will be a little work, front to back.

If you are a stickler for details, just skip this advice. I also had problems fitting the spare in the original tub (didn't know that about the repro tubs, though). I replaced the front tub floor hangers with longer sections of threaded rod with double nuts on the bottom as retainers. The extra space up front allows the tire to JUST fit up and into the tub.

The #match crowd goes :ugh when they see it but I only notice it when it's up on the lift. No biggie.
