i found a set of 1966 aftermarket knock offs and was just wondering can i change the shade of the color to make it lighter like the 63-64 wheels?? i noticed the 66 has a darker shade...i dont have them in front of me yet, but i want to know if its duable before i purchase them...i notice in pictures the 63-64 are like a polished aluminum or somthing like that and the other years it came darker...are the 65-67 painted?? can it be removed?? thanks again

I do know that the 66 cones are a dull brushed finish

aside from the change in the finish of the cones from 65 to 66 (shiny chrome to dull finish) the color of the paint between the fins did change, for true correct for the year of use KOs. 64 - finish natural; 65 - finish dark grey; 66 - finish dark grey. I only have a judging manual for the 65, so it might be that the 66 finish color is slightly different "dark grey" - moral of the story is that if you prefer the lighter look, go with a 64-spec KO, I guess

You can probably change the color back to the 64 version with the correct shade of silver/gray.

I did the opposite - I found a set of cheap 64 KO's and painted the ribs darker to be correct for my 65. It was time consuming, but worth the effort. Just mask off the aluminum rims and then use your little finger to run a small amount of vaseline over the shiny raised aluminim splines of the wheels. Spray the wheels with the proper paint and then use a small amount of lacquer thinner on a rag and carefully wipe off the tops of the splines. The vaseline acts as an easily-removed barrier to keep the paint from sticking to the tops of the ribs.

problem is most of the repo's for the 65/66 have that damn blackish powder coating........ that stuff is hell to get off. (they were bare alum in '64, no paint)
